Johannesburg - South Africa was saddened by the death of Singapore's founding father Lee Kuan Yew, the international relations and co-operation department said on Tuesday.

"South Africa mourns the death of a great Asian leader who spearheaded the transformation of Singapore from a tiny port city to the prosperous international financial, business, and transport hub that it is today," it said in a statement.

Government extended its condolences to the Singapore government and people.
