Johannesburg - A senior South African official has been fired for allegedly being drunk at the Chelsea Flower Show in London.

SA National Biodiversity Institute (Sanbi) board chair Tami Sokutu was "released from his position", Water and Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa said on Wednesday.

"The minister... has recently learnt of an incident that allegedly occurred in May 2013, pertaining to the unfortunate allegations of the chairperson of the Sanbi board being under the influence of alcohol at the Chelsea Flower Show held in London at that time," Molewa's office said in a statement.

"In discussing these allegations with Mr Tami Sokutu, the chairperson of the board, the minister and Mr Sokutu agreed that Mr Sokutu should be released from his position as chairperson of the board."

Molewa had also considered the fact that Sokutu had recently been on sabbatical leave, which in some ways did not allow him to effectively fulfil his role.

The minister thanked Sokutu for his leadership in the last six years.

Nana Magomola would be acting chairperson until a new chair was appointed.
