SA one of 10 unhappiest countries

2012-06-20 10:48

Johannesburg - South Africa is one of the 10 unhappiest countries in the world - even unhappier than Zimbabwe, according to a report on Wednesday.

That's according to the Happy Planet Index (HPI), which has been issued by the New Economics Foundation, a non-governmental organisation.

The report is a new way of determining progress or development, and the researchers said they measured "what mattered" - people's life expectancy, their experience of welfare, the state of their environment and the sustainable use of their resources.

Altogether 151 countries were polled, and South Africa was ranked as number 142 on the list.

One thousand people older than 15 from each country were asked to fill in questionnaires about their personal happiness.

The HPI says that citizens of a happy country should have a life expectancy of 87, their level of happiness should be 8 out of 10 and their carbon footprint should not be bigger than 1,7 hectares per capita.

South Africans have a life expectancy of 52.8 years, their happiness levels average at 4.7 and their carbon footprint is 2,6 hectares per capita.

Zimbabweans have a life expectancy of 51.4, their happiness levels averaged 4,8 and their carbon footprint was 1,2.

Botswana was rated as the unhappiest country, and Costa Rica as the happiest.

The report is available at

I don't buy this one bit!

      tgif.wtfaw - 2012-06-20 10:58

You obviously smoke what you reap?

      Hermann - 2012-06-20 11:08

I agree and do not buy it either. SA is the only country where strikers, dance and sing, surely that is a sign of happiness.

      npretorius2 - 2012-06-20 11:09

Don't take the results to seriously. a sample size of 1000 for a study like this is way to small. I just checked the data, according to the report the USA are also in the bottom 20, New Zealand and Australian citizens are also extremely unhappy, and Mexicans and Vietnamese are very happy. Load of bull if you ask me. How is happiness quantifiable anyway?

      Rob - 2012-06-20 11:14

Murder, rape, theft, Hi-Jackings, corruption, inept idiots holding high, well paid positions, Protests, Taxi-Drivers with no respect for the law or fellow motorists, Threats of violent land grabs, threats of nationalisation, illegal " immigrants " refugees and the list goes on. Depressed just typing this.

      JohnRambo1723 - 2012-06-20 11:15

Well, I'm sure that if you asked 1,000 people living in shanty towns with no toilets or running water, they all would have said that they are quite unhappy. Were you on the other hand to ask people who's living comfortably they'd say they're pretty happy. By just asking 1,000 people these figures could be out by quite a bit.

      garry.garfield.1 - 2012-06-20 11:29

Costa Rica the happiest? Half of them emmigrated to the USA! What rot!

      tammy.laumann - 2012-06-20 11:36

Wow thanks for the crucial opinion of 1000 people. What a waste of time and resources.

      Andrew - 2012-06-20 11:45

The "new SA Dream" has turned into a nightmare!!!

      tshifhiwa.vandermunalisi - 2012-06-20 11:56

@Andrew at least in the eyes of whites.

      gary.dalton.75286 - 2012-06-20 12:00

@Rob. I see you touched a nerve from one of the 'majority'...soon this word( majority) will also be classified as "racist" ...he he he

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-06-20 12:13

Sabongan, why bring up racism again?. Can't you do without?.

      tc.convulvulous - 2012-06-20 12:21

There will be people that deny this, but it is true. Speaking for my family, childern moving overseas for a better future, experiencing discrimination based on race at work, having to live with incompetancy, experiencing municipal thuggery, threat of crime and violence every day, no police service, gees.. it goes on and on!

      Oom - 2012-06-20 12:23

I’m very unhappy...BEE , affirmative action make me very very unhappy. The country will not move forward as it should until these evils are removed and we become a totally non racial country...ONLY then will we be one happy thinks.

      hayden.cajee - 2012-06-20 13:05

I really dont care if we have our differences, but im convinced SA with all its challenges is still one of the best countries to live in.

      Rob - 2012-06-20 13:11

@ Sabongam. I would really like to reply to you but..... 1. My reply would be removed, as was the previous one after 150+ thumbs up ! 2. Your last response is not really worth replying in detail to, as you come up with the typical..." Why dont you leave. " And " you are racist. " drivel. One thing that does intrigue me though is how are whites contributing to any unhappiness on the part of the majority. We are not in power, we are not out there killing, raping and stealing from the majority. Currently, what are we as whites doing to you & yours ? All I see & read about are whites heading up feeding schemes, charity drives etc, etc to aid members of the majority. Oh...And rather a sheep then a one year old baby or three to five year old girls neh !

      Rob - 2012-06-20 13:19

@sabongam - So your definition of majority is black?? I'll alert the dictionary.

      sabongam - 2012-06-20 13:24

@jacqui.daanevanrensburg, think before you print.I didn't bring up racism I was responding to what rob.baggley was saying. If you had taken time out to read the response carefully you would've realised this before jumping the gun with your uninformed comments. I suggest you brush up on your English as it seems(and seems being the operative word) it's not OUR first language - just like me. Comprehend first then comment. Please do that Mej. Daane van Rensburg of is dit Mev.?

      Benn - 2012-06-20 13:41

Most SAs have their heads firmly buried in the sand and are in denial of what is going on. For the same reason, you cannot tell if they are happy or not.

      Schmee - 2012-06-20 13:43

With you there Gladlad. You should check out the questions they ask and you will see why you are right.

      Byron - 2012-06-20 14:03

Most of you complain complain complain, most of which havend done anything for the lessfortunate. Whether you like it or not fact is that there is great social inequality in our country and whether you like it or not the root cause of it is apartheid. Its sometimes easy to do something but not so easy to undo something. Dont expect that the problems caused by 70 years of apartheid to be wiped out in just 18 years.

      Willem - 2012-06-20 16:46

@ Gladlad, you sound really unhappy about it.......

      Konstabel - 2012-06-20 17:05

I think the way people repond to the question of happiness may be more a matter of whether they are satisfied with life or not ... so this result does not surprise that much me as South Africans aren't easily satisfied and always want more out of life, which is not necessarily a bad thing. What also dragged down our rating and that of other countries like Botswana is our very low life expectancy.

      Boer - 2012-06-20 18:24

I'll tell you this, if they get rid of all the crime in that country it will be the most happiest country in the world cause it is one of the most beautifull countries in the world.

      Sagin - 2012-06-20 18:37

Our children are raped, abused, let down, held back and brainwashed to feel a certain way about their ethnicity every day. Our old people are ingnored, abused, raped, taken advantage of and murdered with horrific violence every day. Our wives and sisters are terrorised, taken advantage of raped and savagely murdered, maimed and traumatised Every Day. Our brothers are being discriminated against, denied work because of their skin, robbed, beaten and tortured, been forced to watch thier mothers, daughters and wives raped infront of them, being denied justice, demasculated and killed. Every day. We are being bled dry with taxes, spiraling costs, theft, corruption, collusion and greed. Every day. Our health care system disrepspects, fails, injures and kills people. Every day. Our roads are filled with arrogant, incompetent terrorist drivers who injure, disable and kill people. Every day. our education system is completely disfunctional and fails the children, who are our future. Every day. Our news media carry stories of the discrimination, lies, incompetence, corruption, greed, idiocy, racism and jaw dropping general dysfunction of our government the the anc. Every day. We are reminded that we as a country are going backwards and we have a slim chance of a happy future. WHAT DO WE HAVE TO BE UNHAPPY ABOUT?

      oscar.vanriel - 2012-06-20 18:46

      Sagin, well said!

      omonaija - 2012-06-20 19:23

I am not shocked at all.SA is the land of mass discrimination so happiness can never exist here.

      christian.manzi.5 - 2012-06-20 22:14

      SA denialism as usual!

      tugwana.gwalagwala - 2012-06-21 10:24

If I can just get out of debt, sell my car , find a buyer for my house, I could be happier than now. But overall I'm happy. I'm concerned about the misuse of my tax money though.

      Jaco - 2012-06-21 11:00

to npretorius. of course happiness is quantifiable. if 10 people in one class say they are unhappy and another class says they are super happy then you have a happy and unhappy class. if half a country is on anti depressants and another country is not that means half the population is so unhappy that they are paying monthly to feel better... perhaps this study was on a small sample size and not accurate but since we are the number 1 gun violence country in the world, with hunger problems, HIV, malaria, direct racism, reverse racism the list goes on forever. everytime theres a poll on news24 the majority always chooses the option that most negatively reflects the country. i for one hate the day to day service delivery, crime, poverty in this country

      Preshen - 2012-06-21 16:02

      Klippies - 2012-06-20 15:15

Exactly, price of housing, fuel, food, electricity has increased so much more in percentage than salaries. We have farmer genocide and a crap load of crime and corruption. Does it matter that we have a beautiful country if it's becoming impossible to live in it?

Everyone is unhappy with the ruling government

      msendi - 2012-06-20 11:36

Why everyone voted and will still vote the ruling party in the next elections if they are unhappy…? A little bit puzzling?

      Tony Lapson - 2012-06-20 11:49

Because the ruling party keeps preying off their insecurities about what happened 18 years ago? As far as they are concerned, lack of delivery is because of apartheid, not the ruling party's 18 year rule.

      Tony Lapson - 2012-06-20 12:02

Christopher, you realize you are just as bad as the people you judge? Viva human beings Viva stupidity

      christopher.columbus.3950178 - 2012-06-20 12:13

Have no idea what you talking about tony! Viva white people# Am I racist for saying Viva white people, Because I am proud of our race? Because black people say that all the time. He called me a moron...if you want to stay one forever Tony go ahead...

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-06-20 12:16

      somikazi.pita - 2012-06-20 12:23

      Oom - 2012-06-20 13:31

Go figure this one out for me..The masses are very unhappy with the present state of housing, hospitals, roads, education, high prices of ,petrol, food, transport, taxes..and all the rest. Yet, they are apparently quiet happy with the ANC..??? I don’t understand these unhappy people. They can fix it so easily....

  • Jane - 2012-06-20 11:00

well what is there to be happy about, soaring food and electricity costs, companies retrenching staff, children being murdered, the shocking rape statistics, alarming amount of crimes committed daily, or what about our disappointment with the corrupt ruling party, or the growing racism, and lets not forget the violent protests which make the people in this country look like savages. I am surprised we are not last on the list!

      Carl - 2012-06-21 18:25

Jane, is their still Governance in this Country? The rest of the world is so disappointed in terms of what we achieved to where we are now, they have turned their heads in shame. Mr "Mandela" now, is just a name.

  • lydonmcg - 2012-06-20 11:01

I can't say I'm surprised. Unfortunately, South African society as a whole has become extremely negative - often unnecessarily. It's quite sad to watch, actually.

      lotus.river.5 - 2012-06-20 11:18

Ya!and an unhappy country is a nonproductive country. We need a new leader to inspire us to pull up our socks and smile

  • Randomhero6661 - 2012-06-20 11:01

if you are not happy its your own fault. I love my country...

      davenewza - 2012-06-20 11:04

Likewise. I don't think I would be happier anywhere else. People actually just want to unhappy and negative... it's like an attention seeking thing?

      stevie0064 - 2012-06-20 12:35

So you're happy with the government's service delivery? You're happy with the education department? Crime levels? State healthcare? Taxation? Your carbon footprint (or couldn't care less)?

      Randomhero6661 - 2012-06-20 13:01

you people see the problems and not the solution to change things... i for one get so annoyed when an international index survey and a handful of people tell us what our country is, what about its people, its natural wonders, its heart, the victories, the failures, the wild life, the taste of braais, beating the kiwis in cricket (whitewash) scoring the first goal in the world cup 2010, the mass action against the goverment on e tolls etc etc. i love this place as it is in my blood, change your pessimist ways and the things around you will change, but then again you choose to be a negative.try to see the beauty in hwat we have cos if you don't well then that is your own FAULT! Now get back to your nine to five and remember even if you win the rat race you will always be a rat.

      Patsy - 2012-06-20 13:07

I love my country too. I just hate what is being done to it and to its people - by greedy and stupid idiots.... - 2012-06-20 14:29

I agree with randonhero. You have to differentiate between your happiness and your situation. I am in the same country as all these people blabbing about government and service delivery and tax and corruption..... but I am not unhappy. I love life, everyday is a blessing, an adventure into the unknown and a joy to live. Do I like the horrendous stuff that is going on around me? No, obviously not, but I am not going to let it drag me down and ruin my life. Why? Because I can. Here's is the crux of it, I CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY AND DON'T CARE WHAT ANYONE ELSE SAYS!!! Join me, it is a amazing realisation that your surroundings don't control your life, you do. Hope you find your way to my side as it is awesome here and loads of space for every one, all races, genders religions and hair colours allowed, even gingers (As I am one!)!!!

      nonhlanhla.gumede1 - 2012-06-22 06:07

I do agree with you if you dont love yourself you wont find happiness and also we have to remember how far we are coming from we must move on and stop the nonsense of racism. I myself i see a big improvement in the country I am happy with my little living income because i grew up struggling didn't have nothing but today i can smile because i was not silver spoon fed

    agg whats new??

  • 1CRAZYONE - 2012-06-20 11:03

This survey is so full it..... HIV is a huge reason why the life expectancy is so low in Africa in general. But tell me that people living in war stricken countries are Happy. People living in the UK certainly did not come over as happy smiley people and who can blame them living in that grey rainy climate? I won't even start on the upright Germans who barely talk to strangers in their country? South Africans are known to be out going friendly and of course a happy bunch.... Even though we have high crime, strange democracy and high unemployment.

      Advocatus.Diabolis - 2012-06-20 11:19

Dont forget racism, xenophobia, tribalism, corruption and the stench of Apartheid!!!

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-06-20 12:18

Logica1007. You don't know Germans. Come to a Bierfest with me and meet some real ones.

      djmain1 - 2012-06-20 12:57

Yep - alcohol does that to everyone.

      logical007 - 2012-06-20 12:59

@ Jaqui I lived in Germany for over a year and a half, I don't need to go to a bierfest where alcohol is the reason for peoples 'happiness.' I also dated a German man for quite some time, so trust me I have a good understanding of Germans. Once you get to know them they are wonderful, but initially they are not outgoing, welcoming or friendly.

      logical007 - 2012-06-20 13:14

@Jaqui One more thing You want me to meet real Germans at a bierfest held in South africa???? hahahahaha Come on get real I met real Germans in Germany at all hours: harassed at peak hour, walking through streets, working level and at party level.... the point is, South Africans are easier to get to know than Germans - A south African will invite you home for a braai / dinner easier than other nationalities. Safricans are just friendlier HAPPIER people!

What does this tell you: we always brag, nagg, complain about this and that, the whites are blaming ANC,the blacks are blaming apartheid, the moment we stand together and stop morning the better,we can not be worse then Zimbabwe and rest of Africa,Middle East and South America where there is both war and poverty combined with crime, stop pointing fingers and get up,do something,as a poor man my self raised by a single unemployed mom of 4 I know how it feel to go to bed (no bed) with nothing at all in your stomach under a roof which you can count the stars and wake up go to school, but I cannot lay a blame on my rich father, ihence I took it to my powers that when I finish school I will get any kind of a job and become a \father\ to my sibblings and husband to my mom of which is going well this far,and my goals are simple and straight forward one of my \children\ older then me is doing her 4th year in university while the one after me finished her matric last year, the last one is doing Std9 this year,I'm not boasting of my God but I tell you, where there is love there is ALWAYS a WAY, ngiyabonga!!!

It's overrun with Americans - but is one of the very few countries in the world with NO ARMY / Military expenditure. From wikipedia: The constitution has forbidden a standing military since 1949. It does have a public security force, whose role includes law enforcement and internal security. For this reason Costa Rica is the headquarters for the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and also the United Nations' University for Peace.

I am not suprised - we live with uncertainty every day and it is a known fact that insecurity and uncertainty are major contributors to depression. Furthermore, we see no end to it so there is a sense of hopelessness and despair. Many Sotuh Africans are also living a life of grief and spend their energy in mourning the loss of a loved one who was a victim of crime. Greed, selfishness, corruption, lack of respect for human life, seem to be the character traits of this country which undermine us daily. If we could only resolve these issues - which we ourselves are responsible for creating - we would be living in the best country on earth.

I am not at all surprised by the result. Life in SA has become one of surviving in a 'dog-eat-dog' society, where the majority of the population (includes all races before someone hops on their hobby-horse) have openly embraced the lawless culture. To support this, let me make a few observations: - very few people observe the rules of the road (stop signs, robots, speed limits, etc) - an indication of the poor attitude towards the law. - watch people in public places to see the lack of consideration for anyone else, i.e. littering, queue jumping, noise generation, etc Add to this the general deterioration of services, where it is becoming the norm to find things not working, i.e. sewage plants, road maintenance, the Rica system, government hospitals, libraries closing down, financial control in municipalities and government, the police, etc, etc. Perhaps I just need to acknowledge that this is very much a third world country, but that would certainly not make me feel any happier about living here.

What do expect our country has been taken over by a bunch of thieves and we do not know how to get rid of them. The amazing thing is that you can call them thieves and they say nothing and their followers get all upset and try and proove these thieves innocent. And that makes us more unhappy beause 65% of the country are morally bankrupt like their masters

  • fdalana - 2012-06-20 11:29

saying zimbabwe is unhappy is an understatement.

  • mnbain - 2012-06-20 11:37

How can South Africa be happy when there's crap like: *RICA *STATE INFORMATION PROTECTION *E-TOLL *CLUBS CLOSING AT 2AM *and the recent DRIVER'S LICENCE REGISTRATION ACTS being FORCED upon us?

      JJ - 2012-06-20 12:13

Perhaps you would prefer living in Syria or Israel?

      xzodia - 2012-06-20 12:43

iM here now, dumb ass.. born here, dunno where i'll end up if this goes on

      JJ - 2012-06-20 13:00

You clearly didn't get my point "dumb ass"... Let me spell it out for you since you can clearly read but not comprehend what I'm saying: There are far worse places to be with bigger problems than what you highlighted. Clubs closing at 2 is one of your major problems? You are an idiot.

      xzodia - 2012-06-20 13:16

Oh, so what you are saying is that, you are the kind of person who would say:: I GOT AIDS, BUT AT LEAST IT'S NOT AS BAD AS LEPROSY or CANCER?? There are far worse diseases one can be exposed to, with bigger problems than what you have..? right?

  • konanani.rachicoper - 2012-06-20 11:42

    I am happy:)

  • - 2012-06-20 11:43

Hey N24, how about a "Yes, we have every reason to be" option on the poll you put up on this?

  • lebogang.molefo - 2012-06-20 11:44

"If you happy and you know it clap your hands, *clap*clap*. If you happy and you know it clap your hands, *clap*clap*. If your happy and you know it and you really want to show it, if you happy and you know it clap your hands, *clap*clap*" I think for this "survey" we should replace "clap your hands" with "give this survey a middle finger" :)

      balan.morgen - 2012-06-20 14:54

Yeah Zuma's next wife is Happiness

  • anne.crawford.binos - 2012-06-20 11:44

I agree with Logical007's comments...if only we could take the positives in our land and build from there instead of blaming everyone else.

  • gerhard.bacharach - 2012-06-20 11:44

They just did the same kind of "survey" here in Europe. Turns out the people, who live in the two more economically sound countries of Germany and France, are the most sceptical about life and worry most about the future. Greece, with all its problems, have the happiest citizens. Maybe some people just don't know how to count their blessings?

      watsongeorgejan - 2012-06-20 12:07

Agreed.Even looking at personal (individual) lives, you'll realise that people from humble backgrounds are more appreciative of life than the rich. A kid from a rich family will, for example, commit suicide because daddy would'nt buy them a bike and all his/her friends have one. Who do you see spending thousands on shrinks solely due to the fact that they feel unhappy? And all this when someone that went to bed on an empty stomach fights for survival.

  • Henk - 2012-06-20 11:44

    Dammit! The ANC again!

  • keith.rentzke - 2012-06-20 11:45

      Hadebe - 2012-06-20 12:16

Id say measure it when zuma get back home.

      goldwright - 2012-06-20 20:19

  • mark.govender.94 - 2012-06-20 11:51

the ANC is destroying us and TURNING US SOUTH AFRICAN'S AGAINST EACH OTHER, the majority is too blind to see it yet they are the one's that are going for the biggest ride

      somikazi.pita - 2012-06-20 11:56

That's the problem rite make it somebody else's... even worse, a POLITICAL PARTY's responsibility to make YOU happy...time to take control of your own life and happiness.

      xzodia - 2012-06-20 12:05

That right there @Somikazi is a ton of crap... read my initial comment and you will realize WHY the POLITICAL situation in SOUTH AFRICA is making the GENERAL POPULATION UNHAPPY :)

      JJ - 2012-06-20 12:16

When you make general statements with reference to "the majority", what do you think you are doing? Oh the irony.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-06-20 12:26

Mark the ANC is not responsible for my happiness. I have been in remission from cancer for almost three years. Now that makes me happy.

Altogether 151 countries were polled, and South Africa was ranked as number 142 on the list.... Something doesnt add up here. According to me we are doing pretty well. Sensationalism.

      watsongeorgejan - 2012-06-20 12:10

Rated from happiest to the least happy.

  • ivan.frantz.3 - 2012-06-20 12:03

      somikazi.pita - 2012-06-20 12:35

Try jogging in the morning and evenings...that should reduce some 'unhappiness' LOL...oh and smile:)

  • Justin - 2012-06-20 12:08

Wow - a thousand people interviewed! This must be accurate. Whoever paid for this survey, needs to ask for their money back. What a load of crap - Costa Rica 1st? Thanks, but I think I'll stay here. We have our problems, but how about measuring it against the weather, the buying power, the level of freedom and gender equality, and the friendliness of our people.
