Johannesburg - The crowd outside former president Nelson Mandela's house in Houghton, Johannesburg, sang hymns in his memory on Friday.

"Ga a yo mathatha Modimo a le teng [There are no problems when God is there]," they sang, beating drums, clapping their hands and dancing in a circle.

"We are doing this for Madiba," said Maria Nong.

"Political activists have honoured him since the morning. It is our turn as spiritual activists to sing for him."

As the crowd gathered, rain clouds gathered above them and thunder could be heard in the distance.

"Hallelujah. We are not moving [for] rain. We are here to praise Mandela."

People continue to bring flowers and messages in tribute to Mandela.

A handmade card shaped like a heart read: "We are going to miss him. He is going to rule the universe with God. He is definitely going to rest in peace because he is peace."
