Gift of the Givers head to Philippines

A team from the Gift of the Givers Foundation heads to the Philippines to offer aid to those affected by Typhoon Haiyan.

Cape Town - A group of about 30 Gift of the Givers volunteers is just hours away from landing in the Philippines to undertake a massive rescue and recovery operation following the devastating Typhoon Haiyan.

Gift of the Givers head Imtiaz Sooliman warned the team that they may have to retrieve bodies, and would also need to look out for places where they could set up a field hospital.

The group is comprised of doctors, nurses, firefighters and others.

One of the nurses is Annette Reynecke, who works at Christiaan Barnaard Hospital in Cape Town. She told News24 this is the first time she is going on a mission of this nature. Reynecke said when working in a hospital all the necessary facilities were immediately available to her, whereas in this situation she will probably have to improvise.

The team is also taking tons of food and medical supplies to stricken regions such as Leyte.

The team will spend its first 48 hours in the capital Manila setting up its operation, before making its way to affected areas.
