SA wants 'Made in Palestine' labels

2012-05-19 22:47

Johannesburg - South Africa is planning to require "Made in the Occupied Palestinian Territories" labels on products from the region in place of "Made in Israel" labels, the trade ministry said on Saturday.

"For now, there is no decision but people should know that South Africa recognises Israel inside the 1948 UN borders," Macdonald Netshitenzhe, the trade ministry's director for trade policies and legislations, said.

"Now coming to the issue of Palestine and Israel, a product from Israel has to be manufactured or produced within the borders of 1948.

Under the 1948 boundaries, territories occupied after 1967 such as the Gaza Strip are not included.

"Therefore for the goods or vegetables which are grown in the area where Israel invaded other Arab countries, South Africa says, you better say these products are grown in Palestine or Occupied Palestinian Territories," Netshitenzhe added.

Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies said on Wednesday the move was aimed at helping "South Africans who do not support Israel, but who in fact do support the Palestinians, to identify those products".

Israel's wrath

"This doesn't, however, mean any kind of boycott of Israeli products," he said, in remarks quoted by South African news agency SAPA.

Israel's foreign ministry reacted angrily to the news, with spokesperson Yigal Palmor telling AFP that South Africa's ambassador to Israel would be summoned for an explanation in the coming days.

"This is not a political objection to settlements, rather the act of singling out a state by a special marking system based on national-political criteria. Therefore, it is by essence a racist move," Palmor said.

"It is shocking to think that South Africa, of all countries, would display such callousness, and is blindly marching down the slippery slope of racism."

What a joke. Thought for a sec it's the 1st of April then I realised it's the SA government. oh wait...

      louwc - 2012-05-20 02:57

That was my 1st thought aswell! Checked my calender, no it is not 1 April.... Do we really have the time and effort to spend on this? Our Olympic team wears clothes made in China! After the little spoke about COSATU meeting with shirts made in, yes, China.....what is left to say? Read this just for a laugh

      Pierre - 2012-05-20 15:24

FOOD FOR THOUGHT. What about labels for South African produce and Goods that say; "Made in Occupied Koi-San Territory?

      Jaba - 2012-05-20 15:28

I trust that these ministers have disposed of their mobile phone. I certainly hope that they have refused to allow their children to be vaccinated against polio. their wives should avoid lipstick at all costs. If they are sent for an MRI or CAT scan, they... absolutely must decline. Since well over half of the chemotherapy protocols in use today were developed in Israel, try to avoid being diagnosed with cancer (or, if they are, make do with something less than state of the art chemotherapy). Of course, they will have to decline a pacemaker, should the need arise. also they should forget about; myriad, DELL, Google, Intel, IBM, Microsoft, Apple even the equation of E=mc^2. BTW two sticks and a crayon is your best replacement to Intel, while two tin cans with a string between them is your best replacement to cellphones.

      Juan - 2012-05-21 03:39

Yip I seriously doubt that anybody in Israel will be losing any sleep about Davies's new labelling. Israel has powerfull friends and South Africa is a mickey mouse country

@Jaba- i would do some homework with regards to IBM- IBM created the tabulating, sorting and collating (punch card) machines that were used in the censuses which Hitler used to identify the Jewish community in Germany, Poland, Austria, Hungary, the Netherlands, etc... Furthermore, similar machines ran the highly efficient German rail system which transported Jews to the concentration camps and to their ultimate deaths... IBM's founder Thomas Watson was a Nazi sympathizer for profit and was even awarded the highest honour that can be bestowed on a non-German- the Merit Cross- by Hitler HIMSELF. Interestingly IBM leased their machines to the Nazi's and were the sole supplier of all the punch cards that Hitler required... when the allies invaded Nazi Europe IBM trained special units to retrieve their machines as they knew their exact location but, more shockingly, machines that were destroyed or damaged IBM claimed compensation for at the Nuremberg trials... we might not have had an Israel if it had not been for IBM.

      jaba.kov - 2012-05-22 15:22

I didn’t say IBM is an Israeli company… what I said was that many of their innovations today are made in their research and development offices in Israel. Intel for example is also not an Israeli company however they employ 6600 employees in Israel who create grand things. In terms of world war two – I’m sure there were many companies that benefited, however, in Israel they live for the future and not in the past. Every second car in Israel is of German origin… that’s right the same Merc that transported the Jews to their deaths is the same Merc that transport many Israelis every day via Merc Taxis all over Israel. They forgive but not forget. Thus Israel’s closest friend in Europe in Germany.

Do these jokers realise that they are in serious jeopardy; I mean that they put themselves under a curse siding with the Palestinians (Philistines of the Old Testament)? You see the Jew is the seed of Abraham through Isaac and Jacob. Genesis 12: 1-3 says it all, in particular Vs 3!! Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will show thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. (Gen 12:1-3)

Because there isn't any occupation. It's a manipulative, misguided myth.

      JohncarlosBiza - 2012-05-20 00:59

Racist against which race?! Last I checked there were multiple ethnic groups in Israel, including Arabs.. Jewish folk can really play the race card. They give blacks a good run for their money

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-20 17:41

Goodthing, you believe the US attacked itself on 9/11, central banks are arms of private banks not governments, the Rothschilds of all people are the source of evil in our world, and the CIA invaded Afghanistan in the 1980's not the Soviet Union. You're wrong about "the occupation of Palestinian land" too for reasons mentioned on this thread.

      ChronicDJ - 2012-05-21 15:08

your attempt at sarcasm was spot on the truth, well played. It's interesting to see much of the same tactics being used over there as they are over here. Comparisons between Israel, Apartheid regime and ANC show a lot of similarities. Makes you think they are all following similar agendas... Think Oppenheimers

  • Nick - 2012-05-19 23:18

This is always a contentious issue with no side being absolutely right. As a supporter of a two state solution to the Israel/Palestine issue as envisioned in the UN plan in 1947 I believe this decision by the SA govt to identify products from each state to be correct. However, having said this I do believe that the SA govt is being disingenious (largely becuase there is a strong pro-Palestinian lobby in the ANC)if they are to use the term 'occupied territories' disregards the historical reasons for such occupation in which the Palestianinan were complicit. It is important to remember that the reason why the Palestinians do not have a state of their own is because they rejected the 1947 UN Plan in favour of war. We cannot punish the Israelis for the Palestinains act of folly then.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-20 00:45

Well put. Couldn't agree more. Unfortunately the Palestinians are playing a tragic martyr game, causing their own harm and suffering by attacking Israel almost daily, against which Israel must defend herself. They do this to garner sympathy from those who buy their manipulation. Much better, much more powerful to choose peace alongside Israel than to to attack her and incite defensive responses from Israel to garner international sympathy. They will never achieve their goal of a prosperous Palestinian state this way. Never. They're even educating their children at Kindergarten level never make peace with israel and to attack her. This is child abuse.

      monique.buckner.7 - 2012-05-20 00:54

Why should the Palestinians have agreed to their country being divided and more than half given to zionists from Europe? If someone came and took half your property, should we punish you for rejecting the move?

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-20 00:56

rudiwaan, they never lost their land. It's a myth. After thousands of years of conflict between them and an almost even use of the land, Israel was created from approximately 52%, a major part of which was the Negev Desert, and the Palestinian territory 43%. Jerusalem was the balance, which was an open city not within either territory. The only annexation happened when the Palestinians allowed themselves to be manipulated into joining two full military invasions by the unelected, racist dictators of the region. Israel survived and pushed them back. By the rules of war, she got to keep the territory that she gained. This is an important rule. It negates the value of war. Don't invade your neighbor. You can loose your land. Israel has offered this gained land for peace. Unfortunately the Palestinians have programmed themselves to such an extent to fight that they keep breaching peace treaties. The only solution: they must choose peace and the acknowledge the right of Israel to exit. It's in your best interests and the best interests of the Palestinians that you do not believe the manipulation but rather encourage peace. Otherwise you're doing nothing for the Palestinians, only deepening their pain and suffering.

      Jonathan - 2012-05-21 17:04

@Fred very nice to hear from someone who understands the issues. Its all to easy to be antisemitic but what amazes me is the sheer lies and rubbish that people are willing to artificially manufacture to discredit and vilify Israel. If you've already decided beforehand to hate Jews before you investigate further on the matter then you're bound to come up with any nonsense that, in your mind, justifies your position.

      How are Gaza farmers terrorists?

      Johan - 2012-05-20 12:09

Just because some people refer to them as terrorists does not mean that they are terrorists. The word "terrorist" is normally used by victims when they refer to their attackers. In this case however the real victims are the people of Palestine who are suffering at the hands of the Israelis. So they are not terrorists. They are more like "freedom fighters". The Israelis have a hugely powerful military force with American made fighters jets, attack helicopters, etc that they frequently use against the people of Palestine. The people of Palestine have to fight back with sticks and stones or by blowing themselves up with home made bombs. People making the ultimate sacrifice and blowing themselves up are not "terrorists". They are "heroes". Think about it.

There is only 54 thousand Jews in South Africa - bet no one knows that they employ over one million fellow South African. BTW. Rob Davies is this your greatest priority? as minister of trade and industry-The millions of unemployed South Africans congratulate you on becoming the latest puppet of the anti-west propaganda much are they paying you? \r\n\r\nWhat's next, preventing Israel from sharing it pioneering innovative ground breaking technologies with South Africa or shall we become a state fuelled by hatred and funded Arab oil and Propaganda.. Are we going to label our petrol 42 percent funded by the oppressed people of Iraq? \r\n\r\nYour ideas tarnish the very fabric and moral hygiene of the South African society as you wish to deny the existence of Israel and their contribution as world leaders in the field of science, agriculture. So take your propaganda and do something constructive and focus on the plight of the South African citizens who need opportunity to make a living so they can feed their families and educate their children to give them a brighter future..this is what should be your priority, not pandering to the propaganda of the Arab world who's strangle hold on oil production is wrecking the global economy!!

      Ted - 2012-05-20 06:54

If you want us to ignore the plight of Palestinians coz we have unemployed people here, it won't happen! What's the link between our poverty and our morality?

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-20 17:52

Ted, I'm not saying ignore the plight of the Palestinians. I'm saying take the time to see what is really going on. You're supporting their continued suffering without knowing it. As long as you promote their continued martyrdom in their almost daily attacks on Israel, they will suffer and not have the home they need and deserve.

  • Ted - 2012-05-20 00:43

If Israel was on earth, surely it could be a country. I have no comparison on earth for a country that is too scared to exist, to be fair, to be free from war and hegemony and racism like that state. I don't care about a thumbs down. Why Jews everywhere on earth remember the holocaust and we share it with them is because it was an affront. To believe that a country with such a history is apparently trying to be happy doing the same things that made the holocaust is not for intelligent people to fathom. In Mzanzi we have Jews, we respect them but hegemony and racism is not gonna happen under our watch. If its made in Palestine so what? So Jesus Christ was born in 'Occupied Territories?'. I was made in Palestine coz of my faith.Am proud as a South African I can believe that, even for a few minutes. I don't believe Palestinians deserve any worse than all people whose heritage subsists in that land. Not all Jews are Saints. For Israel to exist as a country, the starting point is that it has to be on earth. There is a fallacy of Israel being there for a Divine reason; so is the Free State! There is nothing special beyond being here on earth! Its Sad Israel believes we need it to survive on this planet. For lack of protocol; its plain stupid.

      yummyhamster - 2012-05-20 05:34

ok so why dont you go POOOF in a mistimed explosion like the rest of your ill planned non Israeli friends who hate the western world ? oh i forgot you wil miss your ipod and apple macbook or ipad so badly that it will make a crak addict look like a reformed satanist...

      Jaba - 2012-05-20 13:34

The world is a fickle place, Anti-Semitism hasn't gone away; it's merely morphed into hatred of Israel. The Jews will never be "loved". The Arab world will love the Jews greatly were they to roll over and die, and that is not going to happen. I'm with Machiavelli - it is far, far better to be feared than to be loved. There are 50 Arab/Muslim nations. There is only one Jewish nation - and it is the size of the Kruger National Park - But this is still too big for the racist Arabs. If Hamas and the other political groups in the disputed regions began acting more like civilised political parties rather than terrorists with the sole aim of killing Israeli civilians (remember, if Israel had the same aim this whole issue wold have been put to bed years ago due to their military might ie the killing of all the Palestinians) then Israel would not have a leg to stand on and the US and the west would have no choice but to put pressure to bear on Israel to make concessions to the now truly peaceful and democratic Palestinians. Israel has every right to use what ever it needs to fight Palestinian terrorism in self defence. I have never and can never support any terrorist organisation who supports the killing of innocent civilians no matter how just they believe their cause. When the Palestinian side renounce terror there will be peace... and that is the sad fact.

  • zybt99 - 2012-05-20 00:44

I'm very certain the state of palistine is recognised by the UN. And as such recognising its existance and economy can not equal racism. We recognise goods from Taiwan and China does not label us racist. The Israelites need to stop trying to use emotional bribery as a negotiating tool. As it stands we are looking at major economic hardship because of them fearing Iran.

  • JohncarlosBiza - 2012-05-20 01:07

      Sameer Agherdien - 2012-05-20 07:00

Why does all or rather most of the pro Israel comments always justify the stealing of land to other laws that they not in agreement with? e.g. the stoning of perpetrators which by the way is found in the Torah and Bible or the Arabs are anti-democracy etc. That doesnt give anyone the right to steal. If you appear before a Judge for stealing you'll be prosecuted for just that and not because you have a curfew for you household. The old cliche, if you steal you will most likely lie as well. (unless stealing is allowed in Zionism because certainly not with Judaism)

      Larry - 2012-05-20 09:07

Sameer, nothing has been stolen. By proclamation of the law of war, the West Bank, the Golan Heights, Shatilla farms area of Lebanon and the Sinai (including Gaza which was Egyptian territory) was won in a defensive conflict by Israel after all these countries attacked Israel in the 1967 war. Israel is the only arbiter and will set the terms of peace. Until such time as the Palestinians accept these terms, they will be under Israeli occupation. Easy.

For heavens sake, stop making such fools of yourselves. No one cares what you want or think. You WANT Palestinia labels. We WANT the goverment to stop stealing. So see, everybody wants something, the problem is you can't always get it.

  • schewitz - 2012-05-20 07:09

I love south africa but they have the international relations of a peanut. They support every dictator on the globe and go after democratic states such as Israel. They support Mugabe, Iran, Sudan, they supported Qaddafi. I guess what can one expect when the country is governed by a person who did not go to high school never mind pass Matric. The ANC are trying to make South africa a police state where there is no freedom of expression, no free press and are doing all they can to hide the rampant theft by ANC officials. The ANC are a not even a Shadow of the organisations that freed RSA from racism. They are the biggest promoters of racism in south africa.

      Hadebe - 2012-05-20 08:20

Schewitz, what are u rumbling about?

      schewitz - 2012-05-20 11:40

      ?? ?????? ??????

      Riaan - 2012-05-20 15:44

Please excuse Hadebe. He is one our fellow challenge countrymen.

      Jaba - 2012-05-20 16:31

schewitz I agree 100% The ANC of today is not the ANC of the past. If Madiba knew how this country is being governed he would disprove with anger. Many forget that Madibe visited Israel with the hope of peace. Today the ANC is hell bent on drawing the two sides further apart. Im glad Madiba is too aged and frail to comprehend what has happened to the ANC. Madiba called on Hamas to renounce terror and accept Israel – they never have! And in 1999 Madiba asked that a Hamas delegation not visit South Africa - they didnt come. Looks like the ANC has a very short memory.

  • Steve - 2012-05-20 07:09

To all those misinformed bigots out there. The first thing you should stop doing immediately is using your PC because the chip inside that PC was designed and manufactured in Israel. As do hundreds of other products you use every day inclduing life saving medical equipment and drugs.Israel contributes more to modern society than another country in terms of these inventions. So please go ahead and boycott Israel products , stop using your PC now

      rudiwaan.joseph - 2012-05-20 07:25

steve what the biggots are saying is NOT to boycott israeli products but to also acknowledge palistinian products! Just like israel acknowledge good made in germany by driving merc's , bmw's and audi's (or are these also israeli designs?

      Hadebe - 2012-05-20 08:17

      Larry - 2012-05-20 09:13

Rudiwaan, what Palestinian product. There are none to support. If you are talking about Islamic clothing, then thanks, but no thanks.

      rudiwaan.joseph - 2012-05-20 15:36

larry, only an idiot would think that a Jew would use Islamic wear, so what car are your driving?, since there aren't any here in SA that bears a lable 'made in israel' just like none of my computers, cellphones, radios and tv's unless israel 'owns' china, korea and the likes of japan, huh?

      Jaba - 2012-05-20 16:43

Here are four Israeli technologies that help VW (Seat/Audi/Skoda /Bentley) with its electric car and other green efforts: 1)Z5 2) ETV 3) Silicon-powered Battery 4. Piston-less turbine engine. General Motors, one of the world’s largest automakers, not only has an R&D facility in Israel, but an entire corporate structure in Herzliya. The car manufacturers from Germany, Korea and Japan are trying to get their hands on a unique technology for producing hydrogen in vehicles as an alternative fuel source. It is produced by the Israeli company Engineuity. Lastly Renault has invested hundreds of millions in an Israel Start up called Better Place in the field of electric cars. I’m sure there is many more... but these are the ones that come to mind off hand.

      Jaba - 2012-05-20 16:58

Every time you leave a voicemail an Israeli company makes money. The computer, cell phone etc might be made in a big factory in China or Korea, however the R&D in many cases comes from Israel. Whether it’s the chip in your blackberry/I-Phone on DSTV decoder to your PC, laptop and the memory stick that was developed in Israel. The vegetables that you buy at Pick ‘n Pay, Checkers, woollies and Hyper all use Israel water techniques. I’m not going to start telling you about the medicines that you would need if you got ill God forbid. Next time you at the ACSA many Airport’s Israel will thank you for supporting their defence industry. Or when you draw some cash from the ATM. From Consumer goods and appliances to Energy, Agriculture, Computer software, Computer hardware, Biotechnology and Optics Israel thanks you for using their technology on a daily basis – whether you like it or not.

      Gert - 2012-05-21 09:53

You see the Palestinians are paying them bribes to say this but Israel refuses to pay bribes so that they say nice things about Israel. They can't think without a bribe in hand = simple basic african politics.

      rudiwaan.joseph - 2012-05-21 20:16

gert, betaal die joode jou om te buig? Onthou hulle maak ook vaseline ne . En as hulle klaar is met jou is jy ook maar net 'n nogge poephol wat gerek was! lag my binne in my moer!!

We have a Black Label, it works!!! Why can't we have a ANC label that does't work

  • Vincent - 2012-05-20 07:17

What difference will the label bring to taste? We need food, to hell with labels! No wander why USA threatened to sanction us. SA gov go seek attention somewhere else please, cos here, you going to burn.

      Pieter Mulder - 2012-05-20 07:19

      Yip - 2012-05-20 07:49

You go against Israel you go against God. So carry on SA gov at your own peril ! Israel is not just another nation , Israel is a God ordained Nation !!!

      Larry - 2012-05-20 14:01

Because there is no god, and the 'gods chosen people' is also a myth. People will take what they can and the Jewish people have taken the land of Israel for themselves, with the blessing of the UN I might add. They were attacked by vengeful Arab neighbors and the law of war gives us a further dictum - "to the victor goes the spoils". Like it or lump it.

  • Leon - 2012-05-20 07:25

The European settlers and their descendents in Occupied Palestine should live in peace with their Arab cousins under Arab Palestinian rule. Europeans and their descendents ruled apartheid SAfrica till 1994, isolation helped end apartheid. What SAfrica is doing is the right thing. Israel is a pariah state and should be isolated!

      Larry - 2012-05-20 09:27

60% if Israel citizens are arab Jews who were expelled from Arab countries. We must thank these arab countries for making Israel what it is today. A concentration of skills and resourcefulness. 20% of Israeli citizens are blissfully happy non-Jewish Arabs. The European and Russian Jews in Israel make up only 20% of the population. Israel will be ruled by a majority Jewish democracy.

      James - 2012-05-21 20:21

You are a liar Larry in the past 20 yrs 900,000 jews came from russia.48 to 1951 50% came from EU. 05 sensus. Non Isr born jews came from: Iraq 3.6%,US 4%,Romania 5.%,Ethiopia 3.6% Morroco 5.7% USSR 49.2% My Dear Jewish friend claims that Jews have been kicked out of every country they ever lived in. Can you explain why?

      Boaz - 2012-05-22 15:45

James fake name im sure. “In 07 alone +- 350,000 Palestinians lost their homes”??? that’s a lie – plz provide a source to your lies and propaganda. “Israel is Theocratic{ Rabbinate} Marxist[ Kibbutz].” that’s a lie too, for Israel is a democracy. “The Ashkenazi discriminates against the Sephardic Jews, Dont hire, marry socialise with them”??? My dad is Ashkenazi and my mom Sephardic... so yet again another lie. “Immigration from Africa should be stopped”?? Another lie for this is not "immigration” - Its illegal migrants who come in without a Visa, without a passport and without proof of residence. “Arab country to attack or push the US into attacking them, like Iraq”?? Another lie for the US attacked Iraq because Iraq attacked Kuwait in case you forgot. Israel doesn’t attack Arab nations, self defence and winning after being attacked does not count as an attack. Remember that Israel gave Egypt the Sinai for Peace and will give allot more for peace. THE REAL ZIONIST NEWS JAMES IS THAT YOUR A MORON.

Clearly some deployed cadre in DTI got to work one morning and decided that that day was the the day. The day that he/she could finally justify his/her six digit annual salary and came up with this wonderful idea which would stike a blow for the oppressed worker around the world. I doubt however that comrade DTI official is going to suggest a label saying "Made in UNDEMOCRATIC CHINA" or "Handmade by a 12 year old in Mumbai"

  • Pierre - 2012-05-20 08:02

We have not even finished debating Zuma's dangling digit and the ANC has already got some other brainless idea going. The mind boggles at all this unfinished business.

  • whoowhoohoo - 2012-05-20 08:03

And we South Africans will boikot all imports from China aand India that does not say "Made under appalling conditions by children in India / China for a slave wage !"

  • Ron - 2012-05-20 08:09

Assuming this is correct (you never know what to believe coming out of state institutuions these days), I say - 'Rob Davies, work on creating an enabling environment for people to flourish. Introduce legislation to repeal all disenabling legislation and get sunset clauses into your social engineering statutory agenda.' Other than than, get out of my face and the face of milions of South Africans who suffer under your brand of Neo Socialism. By the way, would it also be OK to ask for 'Made in the Occupied Territory of Tibet" labels too?

  • Michael Kleber - 2012-05-20 08:12

is it not strange how vociferous and outspoken our govt is about Palestine and yet what is happening in some of our neighbouring countries which affects us more very little is said or done ?

Which Afr. country? In 07 alone +- 350,000 Palestinians lost their homes. Israel is Theocratic{ Rabbinate} Marxist[ Kibbutz]. The Askenazi discriminates against the Sephardic Jews, Dont hire, marry socialise with them.Nathanyahoo spewed yesterday that Immigation from Africa should be stopped. That is when he is not spewing which Arab country to attack or push the US into attacking them, like Iraq. We killed about 100,000 innocent people there under false pretenses. Can we also have some mandatory luxury vehicle bumper stickers and mansion gate post signs stating stating "Bought with stolen public money" here at home, while you are on the topic, please.

  • Phae - 2012-05-20 08:41

Yeah sure, and we are we going to wait at harbours and airports armed with a 1948 map of Israel, our version of their labels and replace them before they hit the selves, or make them change their own labels before they enter SA. Good luck with this one DTI, what a totally ludicrous and idiotic idea.

  • melanie.lee.372 - 2012-05-20 08:45

It's just another name change, like the roads and cities in ZA. So let's see which clever comrade will insist on the "Made in South Africa" label to be changed to reflect the former homelands : "Made in Transkei" , "Made in Boputhuswana", "Made in Ciskei", etc. That could spread the "Made in" labelling. And then one special label "Made in $#T" for all bad decisions.
