SA warned of heatwave conditions

2014-01-16 09:50

Johannesburg - Gauteng and other parts of the country will experience heatwave conditions on Thursday, the SA Weather Service has warned.

Temperatures in Pretoria are expected to reach 38°C and Johannesburg will experience temperatures of between 33 and 35°C.

The SA Weather Service issued an alert for extreme temperatures and high discomfort levels.

The high temperatures will extend to parts of the North West and Northern Cape, where temperatures of up to 42°C are forecast.

Beeld reported on Thursday that the heatwave conditions are expected to last until the weekend, with showers forecast for Sunday. A forecaster at the SA Weather Service explained that the heatwave was caused by a high pressure system which causes air to move down rather than up.

There were also warnings of possible wildfires in the Northern Cape and Western Cape.

ER24 paramedics issued a heatwave safety checklist, suggesting that residents stay well hydrated even if not thirsty, avoid wearing tight clothing, and postpone strenuous outdoor activities.

      Firepool?

  • James France - 2014-01-16 10:01

It's too hot for my liking. Gauteng's weather conditions are best in April, when the temperatures are in the low 20s.

      JohnnyBetter - 2014-01-16 10:21

At least my pool will be lovely when I get home.

      Lynn O'Shea Comley-White - 2014-01-16 10:25

Yes I agree. I hate the heat. Everyone is irritable and it feels like there is a hot blanket hanging over everything and it is impossible to get out from under it. Give me gentle autumn weather any time.

  • Greypatriot - 2014-01-16 11:07

The extreme heat is caused by the sun, which is either getting closer to earth or releasing more ultra-violet radiation. I don't but the high pressure story.

It boggles my mind how the comments posted in every single News24 article somehow become a political or racial debate - no matter what the original subject of the article.

      Pieter Bodenstein - 2014-01-17 18:34

Marnix de Beer; it is called, Entertainment > Boitumediso > Vermaaklikheid > Unlonwabo ! :)

  • Karlien Chantelle de Beer - 2014-01-16 20:39

I wonder how many of you have been to Richards Bay, in the middle of the summer. I live here in Richards bay and believe you me every summer is getting just bloody hotter by the day, we do not have winter. We don't even know what winter is. Last summer including humidity we were just above the 61 degree mark, and without the humidity we were around the 49 degree mark. Sometimes we wonder if satan also wear sunblock

  • Ceba Mlandu - 2014-01-16 23:33

But my dear South Adrian's. You lot can be silly. How does a weather report turn in a race and political war? Kukude engqinibeni. It's far to the elbow.

      David Stevenson - 2014-01-17 08:12

You are correct. It is impossible to have a technical or logical discussion without idiots, who like to see their names in print making stupid comments

  • Iain McDougall - 2014-01-17 08:41
