SA will see more Marikanas - businesswoman

2012-11-05 09:50

Johannesburg - A Public Service Commission hearing has been told that the state is turning service providers into "beggars", the Business Day reported on Monday.

Ndilekaluzuko Construction director Nqobile Kunene told the hearings on Friday that non-payment by the government could affect service delivery, and lead to public protests.

She said the country was going to see a lot of "Marikanas".

"I don’t want to beg for the money I have worked for and I don’t want to lose the credit record I have built up over many years," Kunene said.

Kunene said the Gauteng department of housing owed her company R5m since September 2009.

The public hearings hosted by the Public Service Commission on the government's compliance with the 30-day payment period of service providers was held in Pretoria.

After concluding the hearings, the commission will present its findings to Parliament before the end of this financial year.

    Total Implosion!

      LutherKingsley - 2012-11-05 10:56

What do you expect from a country where the president openly mocks education and intellectual progress. (i.e. "clever blacks") A president who wants things to go back to the old tribal ways - yet he has the support of the masses.

      claudia.meads - 2012-11-05 12:00

You have to feel for Nqobile Kunene - it cannot be convenient to face the fact that your own kind is the most worthless on the planet. Right now, she is no better off than what she would have been under the National Party government, scary but true...

      hendrik.verwoerd.14 - 2012-11-05 19:09

@claudia_meads: "your own kind", is that the female kind or the BLACK african kind you refering to Claudia?? & then you, as a white women, label 'blacks' as "the most worthless on the planet" as if the White Nazi's were the most useful on the planet when they murdered millions of Jews in WW2, as if the redneck KKK's were the most useful whites in the world when they murdered people in the USA & as if the WHITE South African Security Branch Police were 'the most useful on the planet' when they murdered innocent freedom fighters in the 80's, as if Bernie Madoff was 'the most useful' white businessman on the planet when he defrauded thousands of white, black,Indian & Asian investors & last but not least as if the 'White Romans' were 'the most useful' whites when they murdered & crucified Jesus. For all the effort you make to put your view across of South Africa's imminent failure, you make little to no effort to hide that you are a RACIST!!!

      hendrik.verwoerd.14 - 2012-11-05 21:24

@LutherKingsley: I almost laughed at your weak attempt to insult black peoples intelligence, but then I remembered that the oldest & most sophisticated man made structure known to man, that is still standing today & happens to be 5000yrs old, was actually built by Black men not White men, & even with today's so called 'white technology' that feat cannot be repeated. What am I talking of?? The pyramids you un-informed fool, so next time you try to insult the inteligence of blacks, think about the fact that no white man has equalled that achievement since you have enslaved the modern world... & dont try to make a fool of yourself by offering that the Arabs in Egypt today had something to do with the pyramids, they only got there 1300 yrs ago, 2700yrs after its completion...

    Goes without saying.

  • dennis.comninos - 2012-11-05 10:15

It is not only the government who pays slow, the disease has become endemic in large corporations as well. Small businesses have to wait up to 4 months before they get paid. It is time to name and shame them...

      ben.alexander.16144 - 2012-11-05 10:20

I agree, I had to wait almost 3 months for one of SA's "leading" companies to pay R40k......how pathetic is that!

      ally.oh.7 - 2012-11-05 13:15

Ok, Dennis, you have a public forum right here to name and shame. Ready, steady go ...

  • loo.steyn - 2012-11-05 10:26

And the government says we must help create jobs . .how do you create jobs when the same government bankrupts service providers due to laziness , incompetence and non-payment (Except when it comes to zumas home of course) Lets look at some facts the government dont seem to understand ( Or is too incompetent to) Headlines " Black avg household earns 6 x less than white household" That in itself says nothing ,, this is whay I say this Black population = approx. 40 000 000 ; Whites = approx 4 500 000 The south african economy is a labour market " mines, agriculture, transport, tourism etc etc.) Since black people represent by far the majority in numbers, its only logical that MOST labourers are black (by a huge percentage). Yes I agree, its because blacks are for the most part uneductaed too for reasons known and a dark past. BUT even if there were no apartheid, in context the headlines would have been. The avg black labourer earns 6x less than the avg "educated/skilled" black man. IOW ,, yes the black population are largely uneducated and should be resolved. BUT . .even if all white people are made labourers (9% = 2.5m) Plus the existing 70%(blacks),, the avg income of labourers will still be 6 times less than the skilled market. Yes now you would say . ." Exactly" black people should all be educated and the situation will change .NOO!!!... We are a labour market, and unskilled labour wages can only be so high. We will have ppl digging holes with univ degrees.

      ianingwe - 2012-11-05 10:32

*We will have ppl digging holes with univ degrees.* We have that now! They are called geologists!

      loo.steyn - 2012-11-05 10:36

I have a lot to say .. "univ degrees" ... the current economy can not even absorb the current number of skilled / educated black people ( Whites get very few jobs these days due to B-BBEE anyway). The few (in context) that still have "top" jobs are at their maximum earning potential, and fairly close to retirement anyway. From the bottom very few white ppl get opportunities. Census should rather have shown " How many black families are now settled in avg suburbia having trippled their income vs. 5 years ago. I can not believe that census south africa is so short sighted to not put all of this in context. But yes ,,, being ambiguous is a fashionable govt thing to do these days.

      loo.steyn - 2012-11-05 11:41

@ingwe ,,, ai dude .. You did not think to keep comments in perspective,, or is that way too much to ask dude? hehhe anyway ,, you know what I meant

  • lucas.motshwene - 2012-11-05 10:41

service providers charge five times... u buy a bread for 3 rands and service providers charge 15 rands per bread.

      parys.fotograaf - 2012-11-05 10:55

I agree, this is true for ANC connected providers.

      Ze Don - 2012-11-05 10:57

That's what happens when you must pay kickbacks and when the lowest quote is ignored due to the fact that it isn't BEE compliant. You must also take into account that suppliers know they have to wait months, if not years, to get paid!

      george.slade.161 - 2012-11-05 11:14

Works at "ANC Paliamentary Office " . And it shows !

Tsepo is just trolling a bit, leave him.!

      asdhasgd - 2012-11-05 11:18

Mentally handicapped grasshopper that wants to nationalise the piece of poo on the grass. Oh wait, thats a horse fly. I have more respect for those critters. Atleast insects work hard for their colony.

  • David Steyn - 2012-11-05 10:47

Tsepo thanks man for this bit of info. I never knew that the ANC were colonialists. We are never to old to learn something new.

  • sandy.sutherland.58 - 2012-11-05 10:50

Get used to it - we are ALL being F%&^#ED by this government, if you are not on the gravy train I suggest you buy Vaseline in bulk!

  • parys.fotograaf - 2012-11-05 10:53

First they steal op the top and what is left over is divided between millions of hungry mouths and ANC connected companies. How will this ever be fixed? Under ANC rule, never.

  • winifred.watson.9 - 2012-11-05 10:54

Their books are not balancing, they are spending too much and the income is now not covering the expenditure thats why service providers are either being paid in drips and drabs or not at all. I would go so far as to say if we stopped paying our tax today and did a quick audit you will find that they are totally stuffed. Their books are not balancing and it is just going to be a matter of time. We are soon going to be losing a lot of taxpayers because people are making plans to leave the country so taxpayers will be declining. There are a lot of unhappy people at the moment and they are tired of supporting millions of free loaders.

      marc.schnehage - 2012-11-05 11:00

Correction Winifred, they are not \spending\ too much, they are steaking too much!

  • martin.brink.965 - 2012-11-05 11:06

We need a party with a black leadership that all can vote for or the status quo will remain, which no one can afford! Vote ACDP, so we have a chance at raising our children instead of burying them. Please?

      ally.oh.7 - 2012-11-05 13:23

So right about that. Too many people rush out to ge the 4x4s, Louis Vuitton, Manolo Blahnik et al. They get caught out every time and then cry into the Johnnie Blue Label when it all implodes.

  • Kevin - 2012-11-05 11:47

like comrade Gwede said and i quote - "this is what happens when you take the mice out of the bush and then put thyem in charge of the cheese factory"..!

  • deon.louw.7505 - 2012-11-05 12:07

Rather don't do business with these people or ask COD / upfront payment.

  • luvo.luvos - 2012-11-05 12:11

Not to mention goverment officials who lose invoices if they don't like you. This happens a lot when you do business with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in PE. Most businesses are hanging on by the skin of their teeth due to this callous act from the officials.

      winifred.watson.9 - 2012-11-05 16:12

This is all over, these people are so arrogant. The main problem, you have to go in and see them, then you suddenly flash your wallet and a miracle happens. Its in every dept, you have to pay for a favour. Favours come first or you will wait and wait and wait, they do it on purpose...government have set a very good example of corruption even the tea girl wont make you tea unless you flash a few notes.

  • Montagnes.Bleues - 2012-11-05 15:11

DCS tried that with me as well AND most young small black businesses I dealt with were bankrupted by state and provincial lack of payment, and so went on to get another contract and start the non-trade process all over again.
