Johannesburg - A South African woman has been arrested in Indonesia, the department of international relations said on Wednesday.

"We can confirm that a South African woman was arrested. However, she has not appeared in court so we can't comment further," spokesperson Nelson Kgwete said.

"Until she appears in court we can't be too sure of what the exact charges are against her. The department is in the process of rendering assistance to the woman."

On Wednesday, the Volksblad reported that a 22-year-old Kroonstad woman was facing the death penalty after she was arrested with 6kg of either crystal meth or tik at the Manando international airport, in Indonesia.

Kgwete said he could not confirm or deny the report until the woman appeared in court and was formally charged.

"It is our mission to get in contact with the [Indonesian] government," he added.

The department did not know when she would appear in court.
