Gabarone - A South African woman has died before her scheduled appearance in a Botswana court about a consignment of ephedrine, her lawyer has confirmed.

Tamara Louis Azevedo was arrested at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport in March 2014, on her arrival from India via Kenya, a Sapa correspondent reported.

Customs and police officials found 20kg of ephedrine in her suitcase. She was fined 5 000 Botswana Pula, which she paid to avoid a six-month jail term.

In Botswana, possession of ephedrine is lawful, but its importation must be registered with the relevant authorities.

After paying the fine, Azevedo returned to South Africa, where she died. She was to have appeared in court in Botswana in March 2015 in connection with the return of the drugs.

Her lawyer Friday Leburu said the case would automatically collapse as Azevedo had not appointed an agent for her estate who could pursue the case on her behalf.

Magistrate Goodwill Makofi said the drugs would not automatically return to the State now that she had died.

The director of health services would first have to apply for the drugs to be handed to the State, and had yet to make such an application.

The case continues.
