SA writer's parents attacked on farm

2013-02-02 12:01

Johannesburg - The elderly parents of South African writer Riana Scheepers were attacked on their farm outside Vryheid in northern KwaZulu-Natal, Beeld reported on Saturday.

"The land is in a hole of moral decay," Scheepers told the newspaper.

Her parents Attie and Myra Scheepers, both 80, were attacked on their farm Bet-el on Thursday evening.

Attie went outside to pull his bakkie into the garage when four armed men were waiting for him outside. The couple were kicked and beaten with revolvers on the head and in the face.

Their hands were tied behind their backs with wire while the men robbed them of their cellphones and about R18 000 in wages, the newspaper reported.

The men took the couple to their bedroom, where they switched on an iron and threatened to burn Myra with it when Attie pressed the panic button with his tongue.

According to the report, the police had already arrested two men on Friday in connection with the attack.

They need not worry - our chief of police does not believe farm attacks are a problem at all.

      philip.harris.967 - 2013-02-02 12:34

It is something most of us will need to face up to. At some point in time in this "hole of moral decay" most of us will lose a Wife / Parent / sibling or child to these animals of the criminal world. It is not a great thought is it.

      Jo - 2013-02-02 12:42

Riana Scheepers: "The land is in a hole of moral decay." I couldn't agree more. But so too is the awareness that our country's problems aren't going away if we sit and do nothing. We need to find a new path, this one is no good.

OMG. When on earth is Nathi Mthethwa going to take his head out of his backside? How on EARTH can this government continue denying something is seriously wrong in our rural areas? He denies farmers' safety, he tries to deny Khayelitsha residents a commission of inquiry into SAPS-incompetence. This minister actually is beginning to have blood on his hands. He must be fired immediately!

      tim.chemaly - 2013-02-02 13:02

Congrats to the ANC...the final solution seems to be working! Mass extermination of SA farmers

      lucy.bush.9231 - 2013-02-02 13:10

My word...what on earth are we going to do to fix this evil in our once great country..? Why the hell cant this incredibly dumb government of ours just see the truth..?? What makes them so blind..?? Why do people vote for them...??? God help us all.....!!!!

      mike.clery - 2013-02-02 13:32

@lucy.bush - they CAN see the truth. Draw your own conclusions.

      Tuyez - 2013-02-02 18:54

Two men were arrested I hope this case will be followed by News24 to prove that these are narcist lunatics that are also a manace to blacks as well. My logic say that one of the farm employees tipped the criminal about the large amount of money that is on the farm on their payday. Then the criminals used that info to get these these elders. No political connection. Its a sad story though to imagine these old people had to go thru because of these salvages. We need to get rid of these criminals out of the society by having each and every one of them sentenced to multiple life sentences. People remember a criminal is a criminal and it does not represent his or her family niether his race. It will be interesting to see the whole case reported here till the end so that people understand that there is no political conspiracy, but it only criminal acts that black in rural put up with on daily bases.

      Tuyez - 2013-02-02 18:58

I am no Anc or racist. But what Nathi Mthethwa is saying is right. The farm attack is no different to the attack of blacks in the rural areas or villages away from towns. I also believe the death of blacks dying there by far outcounts the so called farm attacks. Criminals are killing decent human who are looking after their families and they are brutaly killed. It just that the farm attack the white accuse black as if the crime is done on racial basiss. Of course the probability of black person to be a criminal killing and robbing is higher than the probabilty of finding the white in the same act. Where does that come from? If you look at SA population 90 percent of people are black and the chances of criminal to be black is many times higher vs other grouping. The other factor is the majority of poor people are also black. If you u follow these cases you will find that people who commit crime are people who are poor and less educated, who are commit these crime to feed their stomach and presumably the robbery go wrong and there will kill their victims. Thats exactly what they do when their victims are black as well, they torture their victim to get what they want. I also guess that they spent too much time torturing their victim that their victim end up noticing them their face and voice that will make it easy to identify them, then they will kill them. Maybe the criminals are people who work on the farm and the farmer know them well if the farmer is left alive he will tell the police. I believe samething happens in the rural areas if a person rob his neighbors he will kill the family or people that he suspect their will be able to identify him. My point is that black and white should start looking at crime as common threat to them. If a criminal decide to kill anyone I do not believe that he is doing for his family. There is no glory from being a criminal. Samething when criminal kill a white person that does not mean he is doing for black people. Blacks are individuals as whites are. Please good people understand that. Crime is crime whether it commit to the poor black person in the village or a farmer in a farm. Let us not listen to the politians who want to devide people on racial basis. And we must understand that people who are criminals are poor people and has no political connection. Think about this you have your family to look after plus a job or a business. " Can you imagine yourself risking loosing all that because you want to rob and murder people as a hobby after hour" . If your answer is no, then any person who is doing this is not represent you, he is a criminal who has his reason propelling him to do so and he had a wrong solution to his problem. Plus he is doing for himself not for his race.

@Tuyez.... You are absolutely right. I have no idea why so many people dislike your comments.

    Bloody savages.

      sylvia.nortje - 2013-02-02 15:36

There should be a death penalty in place to remove these scum from earth but hey our ANC goverment is so obsessed with human rights that those who slauther and murder people also have rights. If it was a few murders a year it would have been a different story but many people are murdered daily and it has become a norm in this country. Farm murders in particular is of a concern and will definately impact on food security but it appears the ANC goverment is either too dof to understand it or there is a political agenda. SA has breed a culture of intollerance and violence over the last 3 decades and together with mentally unstable criminals it is becoming a massacre. If this trend continues the end result will not be good for no-one!!!

  • altusvanzyl - 2013-02-02 12:18

Every single day there is a farm attack!! This must stop NOW! Our minister is in denial. Now what will happen when ministers get killed all of a sudden, every single day. Will it be a priority crime then? Wake up!

Where can we get help to resolve farm attacks because it seems like our law inforcement agencies always on holidays when it comes to report farm attacks. I really dont know why people kill farmers because the very same people are the one that make huge contribution to make sure that we have food on the table. As an African, I sometimes feel ashamed because we tend to blame apartheid for almost everything. NO maan.

      Nathan Lombard - 2013-02-02 13:00

I for one tend to get all racist about proportioning blame with stories like this, until I read a comment like yours, and realise that it is in fact ALL South Africans that suffer the greed and short sightedness of a few. Thank you.

This very thing is making me think of Zimbabwe with the farm attacks that eventually packed up an left and look where its got the country, no where. There is no more farming left or minimal. Our farmers supply us wheat, corn, beef, milk, fruit, pork, chicken, eggs and so much more, you kill a farmer, you kill the hand that feeds this nation. I wonder what will happen even our farmers stopped farming? Poverty will increase, there will be famine. If we had not come to south africa or africa, I wonder where this country would be, people still liv ing in there kraals, hunting with a spear? You have benefited from a lot as well from the white mans hand as well as the negative and yes there are still a lot of social injustices. Do you really want to kill the hand that feeds you? Think long and hard!

      indianajohn - 2013-02-02 14:42

joshua.sematla then explain one thing to me: Why don't you go and live in a kraal? Who is stopping you? NOBODY.

Joshua, you must be very old, please throw away any white man technology you have so you can go back to your kraal

Sabelo nobody cares about the colour of a criminal. As long the farmer can prove to the court that his life was in danger, cause this can be racialy abused. Like shooting at the kids and say they were tresspassing his property or shoot at a person because he happen to walk on you farm plus he is black.

It doesn't matter what colour the farmer is crime and murder against these people should be stopped. If there are no more farmers there are no food. Ask Zimbabwe. Our government can't seem to understand that if they do not protect farmers our food supplies will dwindle to nothing. The ANC only see skin colour, they're own members have said so this past week. To them it is not about democracy but about themselves.

These two elderly people is my aunt and uncle and I find your comment to be sick!! Keep your sick comments to yourself!!

  • Tuyez - 2013-02-02 19:52

Some of comments here are very dumb. Do you think it was justiable for the black to target any whites because boeremag members had bombed a railway station and a black woman died because of that. I do not think you would enjoyed yourself or your loved ones killed unwittingly by angry mob for their skin coulor. Do you understand what the word criminal mean in your own terms? Plus in my utopia thinking not all white prople belong to the boeremag and not all of them cannot think that there are criminals among all the races. Remember the Sunday rapist. The grave yard killer. I do not think that those people were doing their criminal acts because they were white, moreover their acts was not representing the race of white people. You must understand that this country is infested by blacks then the probability of crime being commited by a black man is many times higher than it will be by a white person. This is further complicated by the povery among them. If you kill criminals that you know had done a specific crime noone will care, but attacking race is the ridiculous statement from. I am personal a proffesional worker and I am focused on developing my career and contribute to my family and country and there is a lot of black white who are doing the same. Race war that you are proposing wont help anyone but bring more misery to my and you family. You might be arrested for that as well without having achieve any solution to your problem. Will you be remembered as hero by your sons and daughters when their father couldnt provide for them because he race war was important for him than his family. The solution to this problem of polarised nation is we must start inviting each other to the marriages and and other good celebration. Invite your black coleages to your wedding and go to their weddings and any other parties. That where you will realise that black are normal social beings that are not alway planning how to attack white farms. Loosen your stereotype. It wont take you anywhere. The way you comment show exactly how one dimensional are you in terms of thinking and how you have distance blacks in your own space. And you dont consider them as individuals with individual behaves and thinking. I hope this ends with you and dont pass it to your childrens let them mingle with the global society without your mad doctrines. Intimidating and killing or whatever violent means wont earn you respect but you will be inviting the same back to you.

  • Juju - 2013-02-02 22:45

Farmers should embrace technology, what is EFT for if one keeps R18k of wages in the house? The issue is with an IQ above average one would have known that the word goes around and somehow criminals would have been aware approximate amounts of wages kept and on which dates. Free advice to all farmers; get your workers to open a capitek bank accounts and just do transfers at end of the month…I hear the bank doesn’t really charges much. Something you didn’t know is most wise blacks who ran stokvel’s in rural areas already use banks and hardly keep large amounts of cash for the same reasons and similarly farmers only need to manage the risks that’s all…not call genocide when there isn’t one.

      PeggySven - 2013-02-03 09:13

Juju, Genocide Watch, an organisation set up by the United Nations after the Rwanda genocide, have said that SA farmers are only one stage short of actual genocide. If the Meenesta of Police does not know this he is not qualified to be in the position he is in. The fact that a UN tasked body has said it is more than normal crime should have been a wake up call to the CancER government, but due to their criminal nature they prefer to have the land problem sorted out by criminals thereby sidestepping any sanction from the UN or other international body.

Its unacceptable that farm crimes have reached such a high level and not enough is being done about it. People, protect yourselves! Don't wait for the government to intervene. Join together and protect your loved ones. I URGE everyone to look at for the latest on farm attacks and suggested solutions! this is a fantastic forum for all south africans - victims of crime or not - to share experiences, chat together and unite over all crime in our country, farm attacks included. The Victim Support Network is not just for victims of crime but for everyone hoping to benefit in some way from past experiences and to post solutions or things that have worked for them in the past.
