SABC cans Zapiro interview

2012-12-13 08:39

Johannesburg - The SABC has canned a television interview with cartoonist Jonathan Shapiro, better known as Zapiro, The Times reported on Thursday.

Zapiro said the pre-recorded show was not aired following "orders from above".

"Even in the interview it felt like I was being pushed into having to say something positive about the president," he was quoted as saying.

SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago told The Times he did not know the reasons behind the decision to cancel the Interface interview.

"The problem is that everyone thinks a decision is taken because of them. It is not personal."

In October, Zuma withdrew a damages claim against Zapiro for a cartoon depicting him unbuckling his trousers as his allies hold down Lady Justice.

Several shows canned

Several other political shows have recently been canned by the SABC.

Last week, a radio talk show where three journalists were expected to discuss the upcoming Mangaung conference was cancelled.

The SABC defended its actions - saying there should have been ANC delegates present to ensure the show was balanced.

Earlier this week, The Times reported on a letter purportedly written by SABC reporters, producers and presenters accusing the broadcaster of political interference.

The workers claimed to have been "taken to task" for not giving adequate coverage to President Jacob Zuma.

The SABC announced this week it would centralise control of talkshows across all its radio stations.

The ANC doe not understand the words "democracy", "free speech" and "press freedom". It's only words in a dictionary which they use as buzzwords!

  • kalabafazi - 2012-12-13 08:44

And they said "this is leadership at it's best". Bwahahahahahahahaha. I honestly don't see why anybody would want to be on the ANCBC anyway.

KILLBOT - We should refer to not as the SABC but rather the ANCBC.

Any bets the SABC have been ordered by top brass ANC not to show any program depicting anything remotely connected to ANC leaders which may show them in a bad light. This is ANC censorship prior to Mangaung.

  • Killbot79 - 2012-12-13 08:55

  • customdesign - 2012-12-13 08:55

"...shortly after this he [Zapiro] was conscripted into the army for two years, where he refused to carry arms. In 1983 he became active in the newly-formed anti-Apartheid movement, the United Democratic Front and as a result was arrested under the Illegal Gatherings Act and, subsequently, monitored by military intelligence. Zapiro was an important participant in South Africa's End Conscription Campaign, designing its logo." - for our African friends who think that Zap just "draws pictures" - he actually fought the system while you were still riding on your gogo.

    Does anyone still watch SABC?

      tersia.louw.12 - 2012-12-13 09:34

      Not the point, Evert.

      evert.vanstaaden - 2012-12-13 10:19

*sigh* dear tersia, if I could answer my own question: No, nobody watches SABC anymore, nobody with any sense anyway, people with half a brain realize it is nothing but a government run propaganda machine that pulls anything off the air that even remotely critizes the president, and also, the programming in general is rubbish. Is that more "to the point" for you?

      ChronicDJ - 2012-12-13 11:39

As you say "people with half a brain" don't watch but the people you mention are not the majority. The majority who do watch, because they have nothing else when etv signal is poor, are forced to watch ANC propaganda. That is the point, Evert.

  • matshane.seleko - 2012-12-13 09:15

Dictatorship? In South Africa?I doudt it.Look, south africans defeated apartheid.Just wait until their patience is stretched to the limit, and see how the 'dictatorship's head' will be bashed. That's what I'm hoping for,and possibly all the other fellow south africans who love their country.

      mark.corrigan.3910 - 2012-12-13 09:22

Oh, please matshane dude! It's happening in front of your very eyes! Why must "patience" be stretched first, when we have corruption and dictatorship on the grand scale! Why wait til everything goes to $hit first? When the NP was "ruling" SA, why do you think it handed over the country on a plate to the ANC? It wanted to avert a civil war that would've destroyed the country and set it back several years! Why is the ANC so determined to send us down that pathway anyway? We love our country, and it makes us SICK to be called racists when we are clearly just concerned about the direction Zuma is taking us?!

  • henry.vanderburpenfart - 2012-12-13 09:16

Just wait... Sooner or later it's going to be "leaked" on Youtube and then everyone is going to want to see it because it was suppressed.

      Compliments of Midkemia:

  • brett.misselhorn - 2012-12-13 09:19

So ANC memberships are now in the form of "TV Licenses", compulsory to all TV owners? That seems democratic. I'm sure a similar propaganda technique was used with the radios in Germany in the 1930's-1945? Should be a fun ride from here.

  • gary.desousa.5 - 2012-12-13 09:21

It seems that the sabc spokesman is more of a one sentance pony,he always answers questions with an "SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago told The Times he did not know the reasons behind the decision to cancel" I thought they were paid to answer questions. Maybe we all wrong, maybe they are not a public broadcaster after all but a poor imitation of :HMVoice.
