SAHRC to probe Mpumalanga hospitals

Johannesburg - A DA complaint about the state of 32 hospitals in Mpumalanga will be investigated by the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).

In a letter addressed to Democratic Alliance health spokesperson James Masango, SAHRC provincial manager Eric Mokonyama said on Tuesday it would undertake to probe the state of affairs at the hospitals.

"This letter is to confirm that your complaint falls within the mandate of the SAHRC and will be investigated," Mokonyama wrote.

Masango said the complaint was laid with the SAHRC last Tuesday.

The DA was concerned about a moratorium on the filling of vacancies, shortages of health professionals, and insufficient maintenance and infrastructure development at the hospitals.

Masango welcomed Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza's undertaking to visit hospitals and fire employees who failed to do their duties.

However, he said the DA questioned the motives behind Mabuza's "sudden interest".

All about accountability. Those who are tasked with looking after primary human needs and fail to fulfill their obligations must make way for people who can. Investment in Healthcare, Education, and Safety should be non negotiable and those responsible to implement them must understand the importance of their task. Failing to provide these fundamental services tells us a lot about the society that we live in. Those who are most vulnerable in our society need to be assisted and protected, not ignored.

DA have always got their finger on the pulse (excuse pun) if it wasn't for them things in this country would go by undetected. Quietly I think government relies on them to become the watchdog of the nation, and bring to the fore misdemeanours.

Probe away, and what will happen afterwards? Some meaningless gobbledygook report will appear and another meaningless statement, and then back to normal with no changes or improvements.
