Sandy: SA officials on high alert

2012-10-30 15:44

Pretoria - South African consular officials are ready to help South Africans who may be in distress in the United States as a result of Hurricane Sandy, International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane said on Tuesday.

"Our officials remain on high alert and ready to help anyone who needs assistance as a result of the hurricane," she told journalists in Pretoria.

The hurricane has flooded many cities along the US East Coast, and has left residents without power.

"We will provide more information on the impact of the hurricane as soon as further developments are available," she said.

"South African consular officials are ready to help South Africans who may be in distress" How so?? You mean they will sleep lightly at their desks, instead of the usual deep sleep?

What??? Give me a break! There is no comparison between USA emergency support and SA emergency support. This is laughable.

Currently in New York and the consulate has not answered their phones for two days so not sure how they are going to help

  • pietopper - 2012-10-30 16:52

I just called the number of the New York Consulate office +1(212) 213-4880. It is out of order. I guess someone who needs help could send someone with a cleft stick carrying a message. Or a carrier pigeon.

      strandloop - 2012-10-30 17:05

There is no power in that section of New York. The Consulate is near the East River which flooded the streets around it.

So why make statements in the press?

To anybody traveling to the US do not to call upon assistance from the South African Embassy in New York. The lady that handles things there is totally lost, it seriously felt like I was holding on for the department of home affairs in South Africa yes very frustrating, a lot of excuses, side stepping, passing the buck & not helpful @ all. Save urself the time & try a different embassy. To obtain something as simple as your birth certificate would take about 6 months, no joke. Useless just like they are back in good ol SA incompetent clowns doing the eish dance

  • Christopher Collings - 2013-09-23 16:13

This has to be 1 of the biggest jokes of the year! The South African Embassy in the USA is run by a bunch of incompetent idiots! Ready to help people LMAO! Stay away from the people you dumb lot - I called them up once in New York & it was oe eh eh eh marra eish but e e e e huh how the hell do these fools become diplomats etc???? Now as another reader has mentioned the clowns have not even answered their phone calls for 2 days? Bumbling bunch of idiots! Help us lol!
