Johannesburg - Hurricane Sandy has forced SA Airways (SAA) on Sunday to ground its flights coming to and from the eastern United States.

The cancellation was immediate and would affect flights to and from New York and Washington, SAA said in a statement.

The flights affected for Sunday are SA 203, Johannesburg to New York, and SA 207 Johannesburg to Washington.

The flights affected on Monday are SA 204, New York to Johannesburg, and SA 208, Washington to Johannesburg.

Passengers affected by the cancellations can approach the airline's call centre or ticket offices for help.

Customers will be offered a full refund, waiver of flight change fees or a waiver of cancellation and administrative fees.

SAA warned that this offer must be taken up by Wednesday.

SAA should send there pilots to train landing here in PE. Cause I bet if you can land here when there's a light breeze you'd be able to fly through that storm :D

It's the smart thing to do. I would rather be delayed for a day or two than have my pilot attempt to fly through a hurricane. lsfreak, pilots here fly in poor conditions all the time :) they don't have to try and land in PE....

The flights had to be cancelled because New York has shut down totally, no planes, trains, metro, buses, ships, nothing will be moving. Schools have been closed, 1000's of people have been ordered to leave low lying areas. It's not just SAA flights, there are NO planes landing in New York until the storm moves on.

Isfreak, Guess you don't know the wind speed of Hurricane Sandy. It is 167km/h compared with PE that hardly touches 50km/h I think you should stop thinking that PE winds is bad, and really hope Hurricane Sandy spare some lives. PS, I've been through Hurricane at 200km/h, PE weather is nothing. And besides wind speed, there is also rain fall....
