Sanef decries Lady Gaga pic ban

2012-11-29 22:14

Johannesburg - South African editors have queried a ban on free news media photography at concerts by United States singer Lady Gaga.

This prohibition would raise public suspicions about the integrity of reports at such events, the SA National Editor's Forum (Sanef) said on Thursday.

"Sanef is concerned at what appears to be a growing trend by commercial event organisers to try to impose censorship or restrictions on the media other than the few that the media accepts are necessary for the successful conduct of the proceedings," it said in a statement.

"The only way in which the public can trust media coverage of such events is when journalists and photographers can operate freely and independently, and the public is aware of this."

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, who goes by the stage name of Lady Gaga, landed in Johannesburg on Tuesday on a visit to South Africa as part of her Born This Way world tour.

Sanef said the decision by the organisers to make available selected publicity photographs was seen as a form of media censorship, and was in conflict with the country's constitutionally guaranteed freedom of the press.

Usually, accredited photographers were allowed to take pictures during the first three songs at events like these, it said.

On Wednesday, organisers confirmed to Sanef that no news photography would be allowed at the Johannesburg or Cape Town concerts.

"This appears to be the first time that such a ban has been imposed and Sanef will be seeking an urgent meeting with the organisers to explain the negative implications of their move for media freedom," Sanef said.

"Sanef will request them to reconsider the matter and to restore normal coverage facilities to news photographers seeking accreditation."

Gaga's visit to the country has resulted in protests by religious and other organisations. Sanef said this had made her visit of public interest.

The singer is scheduled to perform at the FNB Stadium in Soweto on Friday and at the Cape Town Stadium on Monday.

If these organizers want to ban the media or dictate what they are allowed to do, then the Media must not cover anything for the shows, including not giving them any publicity etc.

Yes that IS the media's prerogative. But not covering a newsworthy event is really rather self-defeating if you're in the news media business, isn't it? And it's incredibly difficult for a variety of competing news media to get unanimous agreement NOT to cover a news event -- there's an overwhelming fear that someone will sneakily break ranks and get the huge scoop delivered to them on a plate! It's like a pack of dogs agreeing that none of them will greedily wolf down that juicy steak when nobody's looking as they've all agreed to keep their eyes shut and pretend it's not right there -- tempting them with its yummy scent!

WTF is up with all the attempts at censorship? Are we living in a dictatorship or free democracy?

    Boycott the event.

  • blip.noodlum - 2012-11-30 05:13

A concert is a PRIVATE event -- you have to pay to be admitted. The organisers of a private event have every right to decide what paying guests may or may not do there -- even enforce a dress code, if they wished. If you are invited to a private club and they say that taking photos is prohibited, then you must accept your entry under those conditions. The paparazzi can freely take photos outside, in the public arena, if they so desire, but in a private venue the performer admits you on HER terms, not yours. Respect that.

Why dony they all worry about the state protection bill and laeave Gaga alone

      gerald.parker.3956 - 2012-11-30 06:35

So then the press must charge her whatever they want if she wants any reports, photos or publicity in THEIR newspapers. Just remember if it wasn't for the press/news reporters nobody would know that she existed How did you get to know about her if it wasn't for the press

  • henk.tredoux.7 - 2012-11-30 06:14

A private event that I paid to go to!! There were no terms and conditions on the ticket explaining this! Sneaky and underhanded! But what do you expect of money mongers!?!?!

  • Willie Olivier - 2012-11-30 06:29

why do you want to boycott the show? joe smit? are you sour because you could not get/ afford a ticket? I on the other hand, is so looking forward to the show!

      joe.smit.549 - 2012-11-30 07:14

Because they want to ban the press. That's like the info bill. Why don't you read the article before you make stupid comments, Wiilie Olivier.

      DrGonzoSA - 2012-11-30 08:23

I suspect a lot of the religious do-gooders supporting this ban are opposed to the info bill. Censorship is censorship, you can't be selective on what suits your own beliefs
