Johannesburg - The SA Police Union (Sapu) condemned the killing of two police officers in Philippi, Cape Town.

"We are sick and tired of the alarming rate of the violent attacks against our members," Sapu general secretary Oscar Skommere said in a statement on Thursday.

Constable Viwe Mpambane, 34, and Sergeant Mteteleli Damse, 39, were killed and another policeman was wounded in a shoot-out in the Siqala informal settlement, in Philippi, on Wednesday night.

Skommere said police management had to seriously consider the effectiveness of the bulletproof vests officers wore while on duty.

"We have witnessed instances where police officers were shot and killed wearing bulletproof vests," he said.

Skommere called on residents to come forward with information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of the killers.

Police spokesperson Andre Traut said officers searched residences in the area at 22:00 on Wednesday for people wanted in connection with armed robberies.

"Upon entering the dwelling, the suspects opened fire at police officers. During a shoot-out with the robbers, one suspect was wounded and arrested and his 9mm firearm confiscated."

The wounded officer was reportedly in a stable condition. The suspect was being treated under police guard.
