Sars seized 23kg+ of drugs in January

2013-02-07 14:42

Johannesburg - The SA Revenue Service (Sars) seized more than 23kg of drugs last month, spokesperson Marika Muller said on Thursday.

She said the narcotics, including 21.2kg of cocaine and 1.8kg of heroin, had a street value of just over R6m.

"In all cases, the drugs seized and the individuals involved were handed over to the police at OR Tambo International [airport] for further action."

In one of the 10 seizures, 6kg of cocaine was found in two items of unclaimed luggage which arrived in Johannesburg on a flight from Argentina.

"The inspection found hardened, starched clothes, which had been soaked in liquid cocaine," Muller said.

In another case, a man arriving in Johannesburg from Sao Paulo was found with 2.46kg of cocaine concealed in the soles of a number of pairs of sandals in his luggage.

An abandoned body wrap containing almost 2kg of cocaine was found on a plane arriving in Johannesburg from Sao Paulo.

A drug detection dog named April alerted authorities to the luggage of a man arriving from Sao Paulo. Almost 1.5kg of cocaine was found in the lining of a jacket in his luggage.

A man disembarking after a flight from Doha was found with 1.8kg of heroin concealed in shoes in his hand luggage.

A woman arriving in Johannesburg from Sao Paulo was found wearing a body wrap containing 2.5kg of cocaine.

Thirty dagga seeds, sent to South Africa from a mail order company in Granada in the West Indies, were also confiscated.

That street value is waaaaay under! Assuming the cocaine is 100% pure A-grade, you're looking at about 25 million, once its cut and reaches the streets, mixed with all sorts of crap.

Why is this news? Surely they have better things to do

      belinda.west.543 - 2013-02-07 16:15

These reporters can never get the values right. You're quite right John, street value of cocaine once bulked up is approx R1mil /kg Another report a few months ago claimed that 3kg crystal meth was worth five hundred thousand US Dollars. Absolute rubbish, CM is a cheap drug. It was probably worth 500 TO 100 USD.

Imagibe the TAX revenue from that!!

SARS is by far more effective than the SAPS

      john.parkerwood.9 - 2013-02-07 15:13

Not really. If you read the news regularly, the cops get major hauls all the time. Its not uncommon for them to seize 20kg or more in ONE haul. Also, it was the police, not SARS who got the unforgettable haul in Knysna a few years ago. Memory fails me...was that 250 million, or something similarly crazy?

      kortbroek.duplessis - 2013-02-07 15:20

But why is SARS doing the seizures? Isn't that the job of customs or the police? Or does SARS just want to resell the drugs to boost the gravy train?

      john.parkerwood.9 - 2013-02-07 15:27

Customs is a division of SARS.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2013-02-07 17:18

. Yes, they seized 23kg, and 180 kg went through without being detected !!!

damn thats some cheap coke.if you take 21200 grams and just multiply by half of the street value per gram you get over R42 million!and thats not even including the heroin.....

  • alain.d.thomas - 2013-02-07 15:10

I hope they sentence these people to death, just the way our S.Africans are sentenced in other countries

Why is Sars seizing drugs...does this mean you can now pay your taxes with drugs and other goods ;-)

  • nick.krige - 2013-02-07 15:40

I didn't realise we were allowed to pay our taxes in drugs these days.

  • Michael Hawthorne - 2013-02-07 15:40

Shame SARS also confiscated three packets of cannabis seeds destined for a home grower yard. They force innocent people to deal with dangerous characters for something safe and natural.
