Cape Town - Another Transkei school was affected on Friday by apparent mass hysteria.

Eastern Cape health department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said 36 pupils from Gwebindlala Junior Secondary School in Mount Ayliff were taken to hospital after complaining of headaches, and collapsing.

Earlier this week, scores of children, most of them girls, from four Mthatha schools and a rural school in the Ngqeleni area were also taken to hospital after complaining of similar symptoms.

Kupelo said they were all examined and discharged, and that doctors had been unable to find clinical evidence of illness.

The apparent hysteria coincides with public concern over the spread of H1N1 (swine) flu.
Kupelo said there had to date been no confirmed case of H1N1 flu in the Transkei.
