Johannesburg - A 15-year-old boy is in a critical condition after being injured during a rugby match at a school in Sannieshof on Wednesday, North West paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks said it appeared the boy was injured when a scrum collapsed.

"When all the other forwards rose from the collapsed scrum the teen stayed down and was unable to move.

"Paramedics transferred the boy from a hospital in Sannieshof to a private medical facility in Klerksdorp for further care."

The extent of his injuries was not immediately clear.

He will be in our prayers. Our thoughts go to his parents and fellow teammates as well. This is so tragic. We pray for a speedy and full recovery.

This just shows that schools across South Africa need to start taking injuries seriously during Rugby Matches. First Aiders and/or Paramedics on duty should have the final say as to whether or not the child should be playing and not the coach or referee. Its sad when it leads to serious injuries such as this. Schools, in my opinion, need to start treating Rugby as a sport, and NOT as an occupation.

They should apply the New Zealand system for children. The kids there apparently play in weight divisions not age.

Jarryd - I am a ALS paramedic. It is the parents who are the culprits in MOST of the cases. They really are pushed hard by the parents. The coaches and referee support us whenever we say play should be stopped

My thoughts are with him and his family!

...which is why I don't understand people's fascination with sports! My cousin wasn't able to kneel at her own wedding because of a Tennis injury. Football is all about the pain. Rugby... can you say tackle? Cricket, just look at all the padding you have to wear and yet, sometimes the ball misses the padding and hits... guess what? What is the point in running up and down just to keep running up and down so that you can run up and down before running up and down, all the time hoping you don't break a leg or an arm??? "Hey, honey? I'm going to go play with those bulldozers outside and see if I can manage not to get hurt, okay? Hopefully see you soon! Love you!" Hell, why not just play Russian Roulette and be done with it already?
