Durban - Three KwaZulu-Natal schoolgirls who were recorded slapping, shoving and kicking a fellow pupil have been expelled.

The Daily News reported on Monday that the three girls were suspended following the incident, and the governing body of Vukuzakhe High School in Durban had subsequently decided to expel them.

The KwaZulu-Natal education department confirmed the expulsions.

The video recording of the pupil being slapped and shoved while sitting on a bed, and kicked in the stomach while on the floor, went viral.

According to an earlier report, the girl was allegedly attacked for ignoring one of the bullies after they had called her.

Two of the bullies are in Grade 11 and the bullied girl is in Grade 9.

The ANC in the province condemned the incident, saying schools should be a place of learning, not bullying, and that parents and teachers need to take a stand against bullying.
