A WEEK-LONG Apostolic Church service in Newcastle was yesterday brought to a near-fatal end when a large marquee tent collapsed.

The church had been holding the church service at Madadeni Sports Field in three large tents with several thousand people attending.

According to the state-run paramedic service EMRS, six people were badly injured when a tent partially collapsed.

“The partial collapse of the tent resulted in six people sustaining injuries. One patient sustained critical injures, while the remaining patients had injuries ranging from serious to minor,” said EMRS spokesperson Robert McKenzie.

McKenzie said off duty paramedics, along with private ambulance services, were among those who attended the collapse.

A paramedic not authorised to speak to the media said it appeared as if the centre pole in one marquee toppled over due to strong winds in the area.

“It was difficult to find the injured patients at first due to the volume of the people inside. But we eventually isolated them and administered treatment,” said the medic.

The medic said a further 60 people sustained minor injuries and were treated on scene. — Witness Reporter
