Scrap offensive property names, DA urges

2012-10-03 21:17

Johannesburg - Properties in Gauteng with racist and offensive names are hindering reconciliation in the province, the DA said on Wednesday.

"Chief surveyor general Mmuso Riba confirmed to the Democratic Alliance that more than 200 properties exist with disgusting racial connotations, offensive towards certain religions, cultures, traditions or bearing obscene connotations," Democratic Alliance provincial leader John Moodey said.

He said such names were not desirable in a post-apartheid society and a national solution was needed.

One example was a farm called Kafferskraal in the Heidelberg district.

"Changing such names, however, is bound by section 93(3) of the Deeds Registries Act (No 47 of 1937) and can only be done through a request by the property owner to the minister of rural development and land reform," said Moodey.

The DA would call on the minister to look into the matter.

"We can never consider nation-building, redress and reconciliation complete while our people still live and work on insulting places like Kafferskraal."

    I will still vote DA.

      kim.buren - 2012-10-03 21:39

You speaking for the cANCer Bra? Shoot the boer mean anything to you? Catch a wake up FFS

      boltonbarry - 2012-10-03 21:41

OK so hang on. The DA says these names are offensive and should be removed and you are saying they are racist. Is that what you are saying ? So a guy with a first name as a piece of woman's underwear is trying to make an intelligent statement??

      seanrossouwslr - 2012-10-03 21:41

I cannot fathom why the DA is "racist"? The electoral candidate for Johannesburg is a black man, and they employ equal opportunity employment. How is that racist? Is BEE not more racist?

      boltonbarry - 2012-10-03 21:46

Maybe he is the product of the Limpopo educational system. As with no text books it is understandable that one might think that BRATHAR is the correct speaking for Brother

      boltonbarry - 2012-10-03 21:51

Tebzaah. Please do not say sorry. The DA do not need someone with your narrow minded ill informed ideas that is nothing but racist as well

      boltonbarry - 2012-10-03 21:56

LOl I know Somi. I was hoping you would notice the sarcasm there

      kim.buren - 2012-10-03 21:56

You may not need our vote Khaya, but you have to accept that the minority rule

      Bra Tebzaah Sibilanga - 2012-10-03 21:59

Catch a wake up because you expect me to dictate that I vote for DA,unfortunately I wont vote DA the sooner you accept it,the better. To prove how stupid you people are, some of you are even concluding I am voting ANC.Did you forget that your vote is your secret?

      boltonbarry - 2012-10-03 22:02

I am picking on you because you called the DA racist who wants to remove racist names. That's idiotic and stoopid and shows off you racist colors

      claudia.meads - 2012-10-03 22:12

Bra Tebzaah Sibilanga, Don't worry, I am sure the DA is not remotely interested in your vote - they are after people, who will be able to build a country with a future. Rather spend your energies to get Zimbabwean citizenship - I have a feeling the next generation may not want your kind around.

      John - 2012-10-03 22:56

@madoda - vote for whomever you like. Your comments are nonsensical and ill-informed. 1) DA is not a 'white party', that is your perception because its leader happens to be white, 2) DA was not in existence during apartheid times, the NP was which tried to survive as the NNP but faded away, 3) DA has nothing to apologise for, you should be thanking and honouring Zille for being a part of the struggle, hiding political refugees in her own home at great personal risk, and uncovering the murder of Steve Biko in spite of very real death threats. The irony and sad thing is that people like you, crying 'racism' only see Zille's white face and do not use your reasoning to process what she says and what she actually stands for. That, my dear friend, is called being a bigot.

      Cameron - 2012-10-03 23:00

@ Bra Tebzaah PLeas explain how they are racist. facts would be nice too! Not just empty accusations! the only reason they are racist is because they have whites in their party hay?

      christelle.james.7 - 2012-10-03 23:01

C'mon Lindiwe, start apologising to madoda!

      jim.dickson2 - 2012-10-04 07:27

The old NP which became NNP jumped into bed with the ANC to ensure cushy jobs for themselves in the future dispensation. If the DA is racist because of white members then the ANC, by that definition, is also a white racist party. I have yet to see people less inclined to nation building and more inclined to raping the state coffers than the current ANC leadership and hangers' on.

      mattewis.kat - 2012-10-04 07:29

Thanks khaya, Bra & Madoda, you prove my point exactly. If you think the DA are racist, you're either high on idiot pills, or entitlement-obsessed "anti-white" racists yourselves. Make your pick!

      gary.bloom.967 - 2012-10-04 08:26

I'm with you on that one Kim.

      gerald.nchabeleng - 2012-10-04 09:36

@ boltonbarry, and i suppose the DA needs the highly esteemed bloggers that swell news24?

  • Michèlle Smith - 2012-10-03 21:46

When will this end? Please then also ban the words black, white, african, apartheid, struggle and all other words relating to that era. It's pathetic to concentrate on such petty issues - rather use the resources to improve services.

  • richard.lemmer1 - 2012-10-03 21:54

Forget about offensive names !!!!! Get a hold on justice , take action against the thugs !!! We are missing the bus .....

The ANC has let me down,im very disappointed. can any other party pls take ova

      azande.futhi - 2012-10-03 23:01

      which one?

      hellodanie - 2012-10-04 07:59

I think the DA is a good alternative to Government. Their only problem may be the hijacking of some senior positions by old racist Nats, who makes Helen Zille, a true SA hero, look bad. I find Azande Futhi's comments mature and factual - why is everyone attacking him when he is just making some real good factual arguments?

      Bra Tebzaah Sibilanga - 2012-10-04 16:09

I agree, another party, not DA.Their window dressing will not fool us.

  • simon.carter.5836711 - 2012-10-03 22:48

How about campaigning against REAL issues that REALLY hurt people such as AA..BEE.. Age discrimination etc...??!

      Cameron - 2012-10-03 23:24

It hurts those who have studied hard, worked hard, are sometimes more you want me to go on?

      silvia.vaneck2 - 2012-10-03 23:27

@Azande, Well educated black people are hurt by AA and BEE! The reason is that under those rules a less educated black person can be employed to fill a quota. And that my dear is a insult to those black people that work really hard!

      gerald.nchabeleng - 2012-10-04 09:34

@ clayton, i think you are being unfair to azande. I am reasonably educated also, and i cant say that i have benefited from AA or BEE. However that does not mean i oppose AA, on the contrary many educated black and even white people do realise the need for AA to redress social imbalances, we are just opposed to BBBEE and how such have been use to launder public funds into private funds

  • Cameron - 2012-10-03 23:09

Everyone who calls the DA racist is pathetic. If they were racist, they would not allow black people into the political party. To all of you who use the race card so loosely, HAHAHAHAHAHA no one cares anymore! You have used that word so much for stupid reasons, thats its lost its TRUE meaning. Get over your childish attitudes...and by all means, vote for the cancer, because the DA will get the WP again and then we can watch as the rest of SA crumbles under the incompetence of the ANC! And please dont end your kids to the WP schools just because the ANC has screwed up the education where you are! you voted for them, so you suffer under them!

  • Sydney Hakeem Thabo Dipela - 2012-10-03 23:48

The struggle is over was over long time ago, m black attorney some of my colleagues r white n together we achieve great things, the barriers lines r created by those who dont want 2 build a better SA together if ANC + DA were 2 exchange notes to better our country SA would be a successful nation in all fronts.

      steve.nyokana - 2012-10-04 10:58

      Xulu.Thulany.Xaba - 2012-10-04 18:59

I rest my case your honour!!Well stated

  • godesha - 2012-10-04 06:48

Although I believe there is merit in what the DA is saying, I also believe that changing names should not be the number one priority in this country. There are too many other burning issues that should be addressed first eg education, health care etc before we start looking at names.

  • jim.dickson2 - 2012-10-04 07:18

I find the naming of so-called district municipalities after unkown terrorists equally offensive. Something being "offensive" depends on your own background and point of view.

  • jus.manning - 2012-10-04 07:21

I'm sure we have other, more urgent issues in this country and province to address than sorting out names??? really!!

      kenpeg.dawson - 2012-10-04 08:06

I dont quite understand what is offensive about the word KRAAL. Must they change it to house or hut or what?

      dewaldmontgomery - 2012-10-04 12:54

What about KORAALkraal? Everywhere the offensive word has apparently been changed to KORAAL?

  • Burton Brown - 2012-10-04 08:05

Coloureds get called Hotnot,Boesman and Lauwkas by blacks dailey @ work and in general do you here us complain? South Africa is it really a democracy, blacks can call you racial offensive names as soon as you do the same they say u a racist, dragg u to court etc what a joke.

      dewaldmontgomery - 2012-10-04 12:56

So you agree then, that by singing a song about killing Bhulu, you are actually singing about killing farmers? Just a question.

  • werner.dippenaar.77 - 2012-10-04 08:06

No school books, economic recession, criminal police force, corrupt public officials - that should be the priority. But even the DA likes wasting money, hypocrites !

  • quartus.vanzyl - 2012-10-04 08:17

DA won,t get my vote again!!

      mark.singh.9889 - 2012-10-04 09:49

Why? because they object to racist names? You can always vote FF+ or AWB

      dewaldmontgomery - 2012-10-04 12:58

Dis 'n pointless argument, Quartus. Ten minste regeer hulle beter waar hulle regeer. Ek bedoel, jy kan Kaapstad en die res van 'n hool van 'n land nie met mekaar vergelyk nie.

The saddest thing for me reading these comments is the complete and utter inability of some people to see why these names are offensive. It is this mindset and not the names per se that make reconciliation with some sections of South African society impossible. What is even more disturbing is they cannot appreciate their hypocrisy.

      dean.polley.3 - 2012-10-04 13:01

It is within the power of the ANC led government to spearhead a serious nation wide reconciliation initiative, by firstly scrapping legislation that discriminates against certain race groups, and secondly by prohibiting appointed leaders from making racist statements during public addresses. This does not cost money, just initiative. In not addressing something so fundamental towards reconciliation in this country, the ANC represents what real racism is. Their actions and policies are no different to the National Party during apartheid.

  • Diran - 2012-10-04 08:56

Please lets just change the names and move on with life!

  • anette.smith.16 - 2012-10-04 09:49

And what about your offensive names to me?

      dewaldmontgomery - 2012-10-04 13:00

Janee, ek vind Zumastraat hoogs offensief. Veral soos die man hom ryk roof en plunder aan staatsgeld terwyl hy sy eie stemveë daardeur benadeel. Yes to new names, but NO to names of people of the ANC. Because the ANC is a deadly, disgusting, diseased virus that's eating away at what's left of the country.

      aphiwe.mayola - 2012-10-04 15:30

Yah I know hey, like Hellen Zille Drive is like so stressful n offensive 2 me n ma tongue! Seriously? Its the DA, not who u think it is, unless thrs a Lindiwe Mazibuko Street n the rest of the unknowns also have streets named after them then u're talking 2 the wrong ppl sweets!

  • eyesears.handsfeet - 2012-10-04 10:33

Again a lot of hogwash just to make more money! It depends on the individual what he or she wants to name his/her farm or building or business and has got nothing to do with any department if the name was already approved. To spent money just to 1 please the masses because they are walking with chips on their shoulders and labels on their back and 2 make more money out of the process is unnecessary and has got NOTHING to do with nation building but personal vendetta's that benefit's now one except the government coffers.

  • muis.vandenheever - 2012-10-04 12:21

Please watch the link below and then I beg you to tell me Mrs.Zille is racist. You will wake up 1 day and realize there is no more white people. 2 Years later you find NO food, petrol, Kruger park and alot more that was before SA became Zim, but keep on voting and you can go back to running around with goat hide covering your you know what. You need to vote with your head and not your heart.

  • lodewyk.fred - 2012-10-04 12:28

So what about Nelson Mandela Drive in Pretoria. He was a terrorist that killed innocent people. That's offensive to me.

      boeretroos.redakteur - 2012-10-04 13:15

Fred, lucky for him it could not be proved - or so they say - that he killed people. It is shocking how the anc tries to destroy an accepted culture and replace it with their own "freedom fighters" names. However - his organization the anc and fellow organizations like the pac did murder many civilians in cold blood and used extreme measures like landmines and military explosive charges to kill soft targets. The question must then be asked - does he have innocents blood on his hands ? The answer is yes ! He has to take responsibility of what the anc "freedom fighters" and others had done. He was a offensive planner like Osama bin Laden of el kheida. One day all will be changed - the wrongs did unto this nation will be purged - the guilty corruptors, the murderers and criminals shall pay dearly. Yes also those who gave a nations birthright away and conspired with a merciless enemy shall pay. The Boers and others will be free again and the vierkleur shall be hoisted. Long live the coming Boer-Republic.

      Truth.nnete - 2012-10-05 00:55

Mandela never killed any boers at churches,it is a myth that was created so that they could justify their plot to murder him(the plot that was foiled by british intelligence).

      bruce.arnett.18 - 2012-10-06 09:22

Have you even read Long walk to freedom? You need to. Mandela committed sabotage but never took a life.
