Cape Town - A swimmer has gone missing off the Pearly Beach coast between Hermanus and Struisbaai in the Western Cape, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said on Wednesday.

The NSRI was notified of a stranded swimmer just after 13:00 on Tuesday, spokesperson Craig Lambinon said in a statement.

An NSRI rescue craft, a provincial emergency health services boat, police and a sea fisheries boat responded.

"On arrival on-scene a search commenced for a 24-year-old local man missing in the water after it was suspected he may have been caught in the full moon spring tide rip currents while swimming," he said.

The man was reportedly swept out to sea before disappearing beneath the surf.

"Despite an extensive search, no sign of the man has been found and police divers will continue an ongoing search operation."

Police had also launched an investigation into the incident.
