Search for missing teen broadens

2012-04-03 09:03

Mbombela - The search for a 13-year-old girl from Ermelo, Mpumalanga, who went missing from her school last week, has now gone countrywide.

Jacolene Vermeulen has been missing since last Wednesday. According to Constable Jaco Steyn of the Ermelo police station’s unit for domestic violence, child protection and sexual offences, she was last seen at the JJ van der Merwe primary school.

A friend saw her getting into a white Isuzu bakkie with the registration number CNN 370 MP.

Police are looking for Jacolene’s stepfather, Riaan Roberts, who is in his thirties, as he could possibly assist them in the search.

Over the weekend, police extended their search up to Marloth Park near Komatipoort.

They tracked Roberts’s cellphone signal, but his phone has not been working since Saturday. They are investigating the possibility that Roberts is camping in a tent somewhere in the Lowveld.

- Anyone with information has been asked to contact Constable Steyn on 017 819 2321 or 084 408 3445.

Surely they can put a trace on the vehicles registration number. Don't tell me our systems are so far behind the rest of the world. Hope this girl is ok.

It is sad that a report for a missing person can only be opened with the Police after 3 days. In this case it seems that she willingly got into the vehicle, so this innocent child knew this person. When more time passes by the thoughts of a person returning safely becomes minimum. I pray that this was just a surprise holiday which was planned by the step father, but he should have at least let the childs mother know about it. Considering the step father is only 30 I hope he is not one of those sick maniacs with the intentions of having his bread buttered on both sides or a revenge seeker. For now it will help keeping our eyes peeled and hope for the best. Social networking would be to locate her much faster.
