Cape Town – Emergency rescue services in Plettenberg Bay are searching for two foreign hikers, after they went missing on Friday evening.

NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said two men, a 24-year-old Belgian and a 33-year-old South Korean, were dropped off by staff of a local back-packers to hike in Nature's Valley in Plettenberg Bay.

“They were expected to return by 14:00 [on Friday] but failed to return for dinner,” he said.

Lambinon said the NSRI Plettenberg Bay and the Plettenberg Bay Mountain Rescue Club members launched a search and rescue party to search along the hiking trail.

“Nothing had been found by midnight and the search and rescue was suspended for rescue teams to rest and replenish.”

Lambinon said it is not known what has caused the two men to fail to return from their hike as scheduled.

“This morning, from first light, NSRI Plettenberg Bay and the Plettenberg Bay Mountain Rescue Club are joined by WC [Western Cape] government health EMS, SAPS and the Red Cross AMS Skymed rescue helicopter. “

NSRI Plettenberg Bay have also launched sea rescue craft and are searching along the coast (along the area of the hiking trail) while search and rescue teams have resumed a land search and an air search is being conducted by the Skymed rescue helicopter.
