Johannesburg - The University of Venda (Univen) has appointed vice chancellor and principal Professor Peter Mbati for a second term, its council said on Thursday.

"In his first term of office, Mbati has led the university to new heights, strongly positioning Univen as a national educational asset," said university council chairperson Shirley Mabusela.

In the past five years, the university had been awarded two new research chairs: one in biodiversity - value and change in the Vhembe Biosphere Reserve; and the other in communal land and rural entrepreneurship.

It had also improved its research capacity by increasing its research output publications by more than 70%, she said.

"I am honoured to be reappointed and look forward to the next term," said Mbati.

"In this term we will focus on practical delivery to ensure that Univen strengthens its position as a centre of tertiary education in Southern Africa and an engine that drives economic growth and development in Limpopo," he said.

Mabusela said Mbati's second term will be until 2018.
