Security alert after miners' murders

2012-11-23 10:00

Johannesburg - Police and mine security are on alert on Friday morning following the killing of two miners at Harmony's Kusasalethu mine near Carletonville.

Operations at the mine had not been affected, the company said in a statement.

Two employees were killed and a third person injured in a shooting on Thursday afternoon. It was believed to be the result of inter-union rivalry between the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).

“Harmony deplores the tragic and senseless loss of life in what appears to be inter-union rivalry, not associated with the operations of the mine," Harmony CEO Graham Briggs said in the statement.

Management, the recognised unions, and Amcu, had been in talks about ending conflict at the mine since workers ended an unprotected strike on October 25.

Briggs said Amcu had applied for recognition as a union at the company and a membership verification process was underway.

"We urge all employees and the unions to refrain from violence and follow the proper engagement processes that are in place."

Gauteng police were still looking for the killers of the two miners.

"No arrest has been made [and] the situation is calm," spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale said.

black-on-black killings is as old as SA, remember the thousands who died in the tribe and political rivalries - IFP/ANC to mention just one.

I think the unions should be left to fight amongst themselves. The last time Managment and the police got involved they got dragged into an enquiry and are being blamed for the violence. PS Does anyone know who offers courses on traditional muthi. I forsee a potential new market here.

Parliament should introduce law requiring only one union to represent employees. This union rivalry is just immature

      sean.noble1 - 2012-11-23 10:55

Thats the problem Katleho, only the biggest union at a company is recognized taking away all choice and democracy of the union you want to be part off, which also means unions like cosatu which is politically affiliated gets the biggest taking away the choice of people that want to belong to unions that act like first world organizations rather than militant terrorists. government if they want to keep the union structure (which does nothing positive)make it that there are certain criteria for registering as a union, make it that any registered union can negotiate on behalf of their members. And that unions should concern themselves with the workers and stay out of politics

      quantron - 2012-11-23 10:56

No they shouldn't. It's a far more complex problem to have "only one" answer. It is not the government's responsibility to keep the unions and their members in check, it is only their responsibility to enforce the law, protect the innocent and their interests and to punish those who break it. The unions and their members are responsible for their own actions - which have frequently been unlawful during the last few months - and our entire country suffers because greedy and power-hungry warmongers are left to operate unchecked.
