Johannesburg - A security guard was shot dead in Richard's Bay on Thursday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

"We can confirm that Richards Bay police station is investigating a case of murder which happened this morning, at Arboretum in Richards Bay," said Major Thulani Zwane.

"It is alleged that a 35-year-old security guard was fatally shot by unknown suspects. The motive of the killing is unknown and no arrest has been made at this stage."

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said paramedics received a call around 03:30 about a shooting at a block of flats in Arboretum.

"When they arrived at the scene they found a man lying on the ground; tragically he had died before our arrival due to the extensive injuries that he sustained."

Another security guard was shot and wounded when four men shot at him at a scrap yard in Richards Bay on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old man was robbed of his firearm.

He was taken to hospital.
