Johannesburg - A security guard was shot and robbed of his firearm at a scrap yard in Richards Bay on Wednesday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

"It is alleged that a 24-year-old security guard was shot and robbed of his firearm by four unknown suspects," said police spokesperson Thulani Zwane.

The guard was taken to hospital.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said he sustained several bullet wounds.

"Netcare 911 paramedics arrived at the scene and found that the man had sustained several gunshot wounds. After he was treated at the scene they transported him to a local hospital for the care that he required."

Zwane said no arrest had yet been made. A case of attempted murder and armed robbery was opened.
