Durban - Two security guards have been arrested in connection with the death of a 14-year-old boy during looting in Lindelani, outside Durban, Gumede Protection Services said on Tuesday night.

The guards, from Gumede Protection Services, were expected to appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, the company manager, Sizwe Zungu, said.

Zungu said a foreign national shopkeeper came under fire at the time of the shooting. The shop owner had called the company for help when a group of locals climbed on to his roof and started pulling pieces of corrugated iron off.

According to Zungu, four shots were allegedly fired from the roof, and the guards allegedly fired two shots.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the boy was shot at 22:30 on Monday night during looting at shops in the KwaNdlanzi area.

He died when he got to the hospital.

Police have opened a murder investigation.
