Johannesburg - A man was injured and remains under police guard in hospital after allegedly trying to rob a delivery vehicle in Meadowlands Zone Two, Soweto, on Friday, police said.

"It is alleged that three armed suspects alighted from a white microbus and approached a delivery truck containing cellphones and laptops," Constable Sibusiso Chauke said.

When the driver got out to make the delivery, the armed men approached a security van that was accompanying the delivery van.

As one of the men struggled to cock his firearm, the security guards fired shots and wounded one of the would-be robbers.

His two alleged accomplices fled.

"Police are busy investigating [cases of] attempted murder, attempted robbery and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition."
