Cape Town - A man suspected of being a serial rapist was shot in the foot after he allegedly attempted to evade arrest by trying to attack police officers with a knife.

The suspect was expected in the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court on Monday after being linked to cases ranging from kidnapping to armed robbery to rape, police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane confirmed on Friday.

In one of the rape cases, which took place on Tuesday, the victim was at her home in Madadeni near Newcastle when she was allegedly "taken away by force" by the suspect to his house in the same neighbourhood.

"She was repeatedly raped until the next day," Zwane said.

Kidnapping and rape charges were laid at the Madadeni police station and the docket was transferred to the Newcastle Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.

During investigations, the officers found the suspect was wanted for a number of other cases.

A tip-off led police to a house in the Madadeni area on Thursday, Zwane confirmed.

When he spotted the police, he fled to a neighbouring property and after police tracked him down again, he fled to a third house.

When officers again found him, he fled to a nearby outdoor toilet.

Zwane said the man then tried to attack the police with a knife, and an officer shot him in the foot.

He was then arrested.

"The suspect was taken to hospital and is under police guard," Zwane added.
