Service delivery protest in Cape Town

2012-06-04 10:46

Cape Town - About 1 000 residents of Gugulethu, Cape Town, protested on Monday against poor service delivery, Western Cape police said.

Captain Frederick van Wyk said residents blocked three roads between Gugulethu and Nyanga from 04:00 with broken lamp poles, garbage and bricks.

He said they were unhappy with electricity problems and their local councillor, whose name was not immediately available.

A person was arrested for public violence.

Tear gas, rubber bullets and a water cannon were used to disperse the protesters.

Van Wyk said heavy mist was making it difficult to properly police the crowd.

  • Loo - 2012-06-04 10:57

POOR service delivery in WC ???? Nope I don't believe that for a minute. I think its an orchestrated "uprising" by you know whom. I bet you,,, Ja ja to all the ones that thumb down me ... Deep down you think that too hehhe

      akhona.siswana - 2012-06-04 11:08

That explains why your name is Loo, I'm living in that area and the service delivery protests are real for people staying in townships. I had to swing my car through stones and rubbish bins to get to work and you're staying in surbubs and you think people aren't poor? Close ur mouth if you don't have anything to say. This is not a witch hunting, those people are poor there.

      merkwaardig - 2012-06-04 11:12

@akhona.siswana: you own a car???!!! Wow, I wish I was poor...!

      Loo - 2012-06-04 11:17

@akhona, " I had to swing my car through stones and rubbish bins " ?? AND THAT was put there by whom ?? Rocks and rubbish bins left in the street from the previous protest by the protesters themselves. I would also not clean up after people that rubbish their own streets in the name of protesting... Ironic isn't it.

      nigel.vanysendyk - 2012-06-04 11:25

if it is a legitimate concern then the protest it fair, but if it is a politically motivated protest like we have had before where the ANCYL thugs has been instigating it, well then it is what it is, intolerance.

      Hudayfah - 2012-06-04 11:25

'those people are poor there' That is exactly why the DA marched. To create jobs for those 'poor' people. But when Zille marched for job creation, she was called a racist and was attacked by the 'poor' people. You want poverty to be aleviated then why dont these people stand with the DA for this very course? This poverty problem wont go away with hand outs. That is not a sustainable system. The best way is to create income for these people.

      Junebugg - 2012-06-04 11:26

Come on people, who said people in Townships do not own cars??? just because you have money it doesn't mean you should move out of the township and because you have money, it doesnt mean that there is no poor service delivery there... I am from Rural areas but I have a car and I do live with people who are veeeeery poor in my area..geez "get money and move to the suburbs"

      Keith - 2012-06-04 11:27

@ Sango, Really all she does is critisise people? She only runs the most successful area in the Country (Only area to get a 100% clean audit). She criticizes whats wrong with this country. So should she just sit back and watch the ANC rape and pillage our country? Even people from E Cape are running there to educated cause your ANC mates have screwed that up as well. Show me one successful ANC led area that hasn't ha a protest of isn't down the crapper financially?

      Sonja - 2012-06-04 11:28

then why dont they go back to Gauteng or E-Cape

      Keith - 2012-06-04 11:30

@poloyatonkim -Please don't feed this troll

      nigel.vanysendyk - 2012-06-04 11:30

@ Sango, don't be a hypocrite, they are protesting in ANC "ruled" provinces every day, right now on the Golden Highway, Poly when last did you see your "leader" Zuma meeting face to face on the street with protesters to accept their list of demands, when???? show me a picture of this...

      Keith - 2012-06-04 11:32

P.S Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the ANC run majority of the Wards in Gugulethu?

Jono - 2012-06-04 11:33 the way they voted for the ANC to run that area and the ANC has jurisdiction in that area so dont blame Helen and also when she marched for you young guns that dont have jobs you protested the march and carried on like a bunch of clowns!

      Loo - 2012-06-04 11:33

@polowhatever ..LOL "blaar". You are demented. You just upset cause Helen make your govt. look like donkeys. Everything she touches upstages the govt. and its a hard pill to swallow I'm sure.. So carry on dude we take it from wherest it comes .. * chuckles quite loud now *. Launch another National enquiry about R 8000.00 bucks. It will keep you busy at least.

      procold2 - 2012-06-04 11:47

think the protesters must learn that they need to pay for sevices, nothing for free guys.

      Mmannyo - 2012-06-04 12:17

The protest is about service delivery yes, zille promised them delivery in exchange of the vote. Let DA taste their cake.moer hulle kuku-lethu.

      Rob - 2012-06-04 12:19

akhona: I bet you not only own a car you also have a flat screen TV, a cellphone and sattelite TV. Poverty definitely exists, but it is not as widespread as you might like to believe. You can be sure that in a great many cases it is more about chosing to spend on 'basic luxuries' (get the oxymoron)! Not to mention the choices people make about alcohol, cigarettes and other substances. But service delivery....I am certain that it could be better, but I am equally certain that the people living there can do a lot more to improve their not littering and dumping.

      Alan - 2012-06-04 12:21

People pour into places like Gugulethu, do not pay for services, then expect everything for FREE? Where does this type of thinking come from???

      Tony Lapson - 2012-06-04 12:55 3/4 wards ANC.

  • Junebugg - 2012-06-04 11:14

This is what I have always questioned about DA. They say WC has the best service delivery, well maybe in the Suburbs ..If you go to Khayelisha,Gugulethu, Langa , Nyanga and Capeflats...Not a lot has at the end of the day , they just like ANC ..where Sandton service delivery is on point and Alexandra is something else yet they are neighbors

      Keith - 2012-06-04 11:22

1 Protest in how long? Plus remember it takes time to fix the problems that they have inherited from the previous ANC Councillors. ANC has taken 18 years to to Jack Sh*t Zille will get it right don't stress.

      lindaawhelan - 2012-06-04 11:38

There's only one DA ward in Gugulethu. The rest are all ANC wards.

      Junebugg - 2012-06-04 11:56

Lindiwe in that case then I understand , thanks for clearing that up

      goyougoodthing - 2012-06-04 17:06

Quite honestly junebugg, in the areas where the service delivery is not great, how many pay rates? About ZERO. Make the areas where people pay tax and rates nice first, then they won't mind paying tax to fix the areas where no one pays. All the protestor want is more more more and yet they contribute NOTHING.

  • Richard.Poulton - 2012-06-04 11:15

Unhappy with your area's service delivery? Easy. Break what's left. That'll show them!

      Sonja - 2012-06-04 11:29

      nothing for free....!! damn!

      William - 2012-06-04 11:47

      Bunch of morons!!

  • anthro45 - 2012-06-04 11:18

That's right. You come from nowhere, you steal a piece of land and the very next day demand service, including electricity, water and toilets. And what's more, you break down the services that is already there. That's so typically SA of you. What else can we give you to stuff up?

      sango.jika - 2012-06-04 11:23

if you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen. One more thing what land did we still according to you?

      Junebugg - 2012-06-04 11:28

yeah and the Europeans are the Kings of stealing piece of Lands, Natives Americans and Africans would testify to that...I guess they learn from the best

      Jono - 2012-06-04 11:37

Steal might be a rough word but you stay there for free, you dont pay for any services and your break down what gets given to you! is that fair? why must we keep paying your bills?

      Loo - 2012-06-04 11:40

Junebug .. buy some Nando's and get perspective lol

      William - 2012-06-04 11:54

Did any of them buy the land they are squatting on? No, they stole it. They continuously vote the ANC into power although they are taken for a ride in the Eastern Cape, than they relocate to a better run province to protest against a government who is really working for its people. Why don't they just go back and vote a damn better government into power if Zille is not doing a good job for them here?

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-06-04 12:15

How can you steal something that was never actually OWNED by someone else?

  • Tanduxolo Nguza - 2012-06-04 11:19

    believe it, its true

      Tony Lapson - 2012-06-04 12:58

Yeah it is true that it is 3/4 ANC

      theprodigy.brian - 2012-06-04 16:56

you get what you Evota for, vote for ANC & you get more nothing.

  • lydonmcg - 2012-06-04 11:24

I can't say I have any sympathy. 3 of the 4 Gugulethu wards are governed by the ANC. Continue to vote like sheep and you'll continue to be treated like sheep by your elected overlords.

      nigel.vanysendyk - 2012-06-04 11:35

      haha, good point

      Junebugg - 2012-06-04 11:49

I agree with Iydonmcg....I also do not feel sympathy for people who continually oppress themselves...

  • Mtshezi Yonk'insipho Iyawasha Mkhize - 2012-06-04 11:33

      mkgatla3 - 2012-06-04 12:27

U are liying the area is under DA......

      Tony Lapson - 2012-06-04 12:53

3 wards ANC 1 ward DA It amazes me that people in south Africa use the Internet more for hate than research.

  • richard.hipkin - 2012-06-04 12:28

He said they were unhappy with electricity problems and their local councillor, whose name was not immediately available. Hardly a reason to act like hooligans, I smell political interference..

  • Ryno - 2012-06-04 12:31

thats is - vandalize that what is currently there and demand new one's - just to be vandalized again in 3 years!!

  • Kagiso Spat Truthtell - 2012-06-04 12:36

      Tony Lapson - 2012-06-04 12:52

3 wards for the area are ANC wards. 1 DA ward.

      theprodigy.brian - 2012-06-04 16:54

you mean in the ANC wards in Guguleto, your dumb prejudice, is making you bling to the reality, the WARDS ARE ANC, thats why they sheep are complaining, in ANC wards there is no service

  • Tony Lapson - 2012-06-04 12:48

Gugulethu: • Councillor Melody Klaas (ANC) (Ward 40) (Belinda) Ntombende Landingwe (Ward 41) (ANC) Mandisa Matshoba (Ward 42) (ANC) Faiza Adams (Ward 45) (DA)

      Tony Lapson - 2012-06-04 12:52 - last updated April 10th 2012

      Mlamli - 2012-06-04 13:14

When the protests are in DA controlled Metro the blame will be shifted to ward level lol

      Byron - 2012-06-04 14:55

lol @Mlamli - you know how it works with sheep - all sheep are brainwashed to follow their shepherds regardless

      theprodigy.brian - 2012-06-04 16:55

  • Mike Purchase - 2012-06-04 13:09

Some peoples comments here are are so clever,if you are so clever you go sort the problem out with your comrads,i thought not so rather shut up and go be productive, seems like the less you produce in this country the bigger your mouth is.

  • burgergc - 2012-06-04 13:36

This article is extremely vague. Assumptions will abound.

  • Heinrich - 2012-06-04 13:44

Can't get something you don't pay for. Or i suppose , you can get something other people pays for. So , let's throw stones!!!

      Freddie Kruger - 2013-09-05 10:43

Hi need to know that most of the things that we(whites) own were given on a silver platter(fact)...we have been setup(mostly by Apartheid laws) to be finacially stable and now we are discriminating against the same people that we screwed over? jy's dom maan!

  • sifiso.msimango - 2012-06-04 14:02

da is very good in rushing to courts for stupid things instead of delivering services to people who voted it. they claim to be the best provincial government, its nonsense.

      Rob - 2012-06-04 15:29

sifiso: What is nonsense? In what way is the da disappointing you?

      nigel.burgess.52 - 2012-06-04 16:25

It's not a claim. Proven recorded fact. Cry as much as you want. It's fact. Sorry for you.

  • WitWolf - 2012-06-04 14:13

YOU are the ones voting for the anc. And yet you will vote again for lies, corruption and NO service... viva anc, viva ne?

  • Vincent - 2012-06-04 14:24

Just a hand full Gugulethu protestants always. News24 next time this happens, please, clarify, protest in Gugulethu. Not CT!

  • vernon.samuel.7 - 2012-06-04 14:36

The DA needs to take this on the chin and buck up on their service delivery. It does no good to make this an ANC/DA squabble while the people suffer. They should not let the anger in Cape Town build up to the levels experienced in Jhb. And stupid DA supporters on this forum should not act as though their party is without fault.

  • Freddie Kruger - 2013-09-05 10:31

Guys come!Service delivery is a big issue and it should be eradicated. We need to stop pointing fingers so that we can move forward. Lets not be hipocrites. we should not accept poor service delivery by anyone DA or ANC finish and klaar lets not be biased...geez!
