Johannesburg - Seven people were killed and nine others were injured on Sunday evening when the taxi they were travelling in overturned on the N14 South, near the Jean Avenue/Centurion offramp, Tshwane emergency services said.

Spokesperson Johan Pieterse said that seven people were declared dead on the scene, while two were critically injured and three were seriously injured.

Another four people sustained minor to moderate injuries.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident and the cause was not immediately known.

Some lanes of the N14 in the vicinity of the crash were closed to traffic while clean-up operations continued.

Some debris from the taxi crash hit a bus travelling in the opposite direction.

The windscreen of the bus was damaged, but no one from the bus was injured.
