Seven robbers shot dead

2012-11-25 02:13

Johannesburg - Seven suspected robbers were shot dead at Protea Coin cash compound west of Johannesburg on Saturday, the Hawks said.

"At around 17:00, the Hawks and the special task force confronted a group of 20 armed robbers who were about to rob a Protea Coin compound in Robertsville," said Hawks Captain Paul Ramaloko.

"After they were cornered, they shot at the Hawks; upon retaliation seven were fatally shot. Nine were injured and hospitalised."

Eleven vehicles and a number of firearms were confiscated.

No further details were immediately available.

Go Hawks! I seriously doubt the term "suspected" is necessary?

      sean.bagley.50 - 2012-11-25 04:15

Excellent!!At least the authorities are winning the fight against crime in the country.7 down with several more to go.Keep it up Hawks!!

      art5SA - 2012-11-25 05:24

Wonder how many of the gang were SAPS members?

      michael.horton.566790 - 2012-11-25 05:24

Geez... They don't even worry about the vans anymore... They go straight for the mother-load!!! And 20??? It a damn small army! If they succeeded, it would have probably been SA's most costly robbery ever! This is really scary. Well done Hawks!

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-11-25 07:07

Great Hawks, now go get the thieves involved in the R250 Million Nkandla heist...

      nigel.burgess.334 - 2012-11-25 07:16

@ Leonard - agreed, my exact thoughts as well. Well done SAPS/STF/Hawks. Yes sir, that's how it's done. We're not interested in any Hoo Haa. Dead criminals is all we want thank you.

      en.gineer.359 - 2012-11-25 07:16

The Hawks probably did the intelligence collecting, the special task force (kinda like American AWAY) probably did most of the shooting. I know I'm being picky, but task force members hardly get any credit.

      stirer.kathray - 2012-11-25 07:43

This HAS to have been a tip-off. In a gang of 20 thee's always at least one big-mouthed braggart; and in trying to recruit a large gang, there's just got to be at least one sane person who knows the difference between right and wrong.

      glen.e.huysamer - 2012-11-25 09:37

It seem that this Christmas season is going to earn the nickname................ Blackmass....... for these armed in transit syndicates...... as it seems that the hawks intend to fly high this season. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that top corrupt structures within the police have been removed?

I hope nobody takes offence with the reporter calling it the Coin Security COMPOUND?? Mind you there are similarities here between the Coin Security Compound and the Zuma Compound - a place where a LOT of money is stored!!

      jackal666.daniel - 2012-11-26 09:38

Compound? I thought that was racist! Glad they got them though.

20 out 20 would have made an excellent read! Well, 7 down and 9 out of circulation...? I guess ‘congratulations’ is still in order.

20 out 20 would have made an excellent read! Well, 7 down and 9 out of circulation...? I guess ‘congratulations’ is in order.

  • lmabika - 2012-11-25 02:27

One would hope criminals would learn from this, big up to the hawks, criminals shouldn't have rights whatsover!

  • aspruyt - 2012-11-25 02:31

    Well done guys!

  • willem.v.hoven - 2012-11-25 02:31

7 out of 20. That is only about a 34% pass rate. Aim higher.

      dan8472 - 2012-11-25 23:53

7 moer toe, 9 injured and hospitalised. Thats 16 in total off the streets, the other four it doesn't say anything about.... Thats an 80% success rate and the 9 that survived will be wishing they were killed when their rear ends end up as a general fun park for the other prisoners when they get locked away.

  • aroka.murombe - 2012-11-25 02:41

An act of crime met wit a real match damn. The hawks can aim 7 was good for a start but next time try and take them all out..... This is good that I've ever heard in ages far better than zuma stories...

      duane.low - 2012-11-25 10:57

7 dead but 9 wounded that is 16 from 20 hit.... not bad no mention if any cops got hit so ya good stuff...... where the other 4? GO HAWKS

  • keith.recore - 2012-11-25 02:43

for as many "bad" police we often read about, there are equally just as many who really would like to fight crime and do this as their career. Good job on this one Hawks. May your success rub off on fellow officers.

  • aroka.murombe - 2012-11-25 02:47

Guys I can't stop commenting on this story I'm going to printing it to show it to ma kids 1 day that the hawks are far better than our president.. I think I'm going to vote u into power......

      theo.schoeman.71 - 2012-11-25 06:43

@aroka - simple, the hawks have balls the president dont

Wesley.nel; art55a; karel du guys are real haters. Why are you now blaming ANC saying all the nasty stuff. Oh please. ANC has already secured funding for their conference. Now to suggest that that attempted robbery is somehow connected to ANC conference is mischievious to say the least. Our cops did great give credit where it is due

  • jannielr - 2012-11-25 06:55

Well done hawks!!! The sad thing is that; With a rise in wild cat strikes being supported by political parties (before election), by means of not combating these actions, have led to minimal to no investor interest in SA. The economy will dwindle and industries will look at mechanization to improve on productivity. With high salary demands, the result will be fewer workers, and more jobless people. In a nutshell, all this means; fewer tax payers, fewer jobs, fewer investors, less profit and ultimately more crime. SA need to wake up!!! Stats SA; only 10% of SA pay taxes, while a shocking 30% live off grants.

      mike.bundy.73 - 2012-11-26 11:37

Silly and untrue stats - ALL of SA pays tax
