Cape Town – A man has been attacked by a shark while surfing at Sandstrand, Jongensfontein, close to Stilbaai, in the Western Cape on Friday.

29-year-old Jacque Mostert, from Centurion, was surfing with friends when the shark attacked.

"Initial estimates, based on the eye-witness accounts, and from the bite marks we estimate the shark to have been between 4m and 4.5m but the species of shark is not yet confirmed," the NSRI’s spokesperson Craig Lambinon said.

The man suffered two serious lacerations to his upper left leg and knee.

The NSRI and a local doctor treated the man for massive blood loss on the scene.

He is currently in a stable condition.

Oh the irony. So you never figured to measure the chances of you dying on the road, compared to shark attack?

Studies proven that Great Whites are opportunistic hunters. He must've been isolated or surfing on his own. Glad he's ok, hope the shark survives the trawlers. Save the sharks and our surfers. Shoot-to-kill the illegal trawlers

The mind boggles at why anyone would want to thumbs down this comment. Come on, you who did it, tell us what is wrong with it. If you have any guts, that is. Probably not.

I went great white shark diving in oubaai about a month ago. And i must say they are beautiful creatures. Id rather surf and swin in the sea than live on land. We have more chance of been killed my robbers than a shark.
