Johannesburg - Reports that the police's monitoring body failed to act against alleged brutality by members of the Cato Manor organised crime unit in 2008 were "patently false", the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said on Sunday.

"Since none of the allegations have been confirmed through a credible investigation, a fact pointed out to the journalist, the statement by City Press that the IPID 'failed' is patently false," spokesperson Moses Dlamini said in a statement.

"The City Press has been fed a pack of unfounded allegations by a disgruntled employee and it has failed the basic journalism test of objective and accurate reporting."

Earlier, the newspaper reported that the Independent Complaints Directorate, now known as the IPID, was aware of the unit's alleged criminality four years ago, but did not follow through on investigations into these allegations.

Dlamini claimed that the report did not provide "proper context" for the story.

"The interest was only on presenting an impression that something untoward is going on in the IPID."
