The sheriff has attached assets of the Gariep municipality in the Free State due to non-payment for an accounting system, the DA in the area says.

Johannesburg - The sheriff has attached assets of the Gariep municipality in the Free State due to non-payment for an accounting system, the DA in the area said on Thursday.

The assets were attached on Tuesday, councillor Marina van Zyl said in a statement.

"Data M Computer Software CC has been owed money by [the] Gariep municipality since the termination date of their services in June 2011.

"The arrogance of the municipal manager, Thembinkosi Mawonga, to not honour this payment under his administration has left the municipality in shame," she said.

The municipality could not be immediately reached for comment.

Van Zyl said the amount involved was R400 000 and that if it had been paid back in 2011, would have been considerably less.

"This municipality runs the risk of even more attachments with it owing its creditors roughly R65m," she claimed.

The Gariep municipality consists of Burgersdorp, Steynsburg, Venterstad and Oviston.

In 2012, the DA called on the municipality to be placed under administration, Sapa reported at the time.

This was after the local sheriff attached municipal vehicles and furniture after it failed to pay staff pensions over to the SA Municipal Workers' Union.
