Shock as CT's Castle removes old SA flag

2012-11-23 08:45

Cape Town - Many South Africans have reacted with shock to the news that the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town will no longer display all the flags representing the regimes involved in the country’s history.

From now on only the new South African flag will be flown, reported Die Burger.

This followed after an ANC MP, Nomfunelo Mabedla, a member of the parliamentary portfolio committee on defence said seeing the old SA flag at the Castle upset her.

A decision was then taken that the Dutch, British Union and old SA flags representing the country’s historic heritage would be removed and that only the country's newest flag would be flying at the Castle in future.

South Africans took to social media to express their outrage, saying the flags represented the country’s history, which didn’t start in 1994.

Some users stated that this decision didn’t bode well for transformation in the country and said it would promote racial hatred.

Mabedla apparently said the old flag had to be “put away in a museum with other artefacts dating from that era”.

“That flag belongs in a museum and shouldn’t fly proudly next to the SA flag,” Mabandla said.

I agree with the dopey mooooo, the old SA never existed, there was never apartheid, or an armed struggle, we all smoke a bit of spliff, and voila, New SA

*sigh @rory: I work with a Zimbabwian guy. Awesome guy! He keeps saying he has seen this show. And it doesn't end well. And worst of all, he says he doesn't see us being able to do anything about it...

Does this mean SA falls in the newest countries on Earth since we were only founded in '94 :/

Think they should remove the new flag aslo with the zuma scandal that flag is tainted let them design a new one... this new flag of ours is upsetting it reminds me of the corruption and everything not nice about the anc and south africa.... I can understand that some people are upset about the Oranje Panje Blou... but you must get over it someday... so we multicoloureds must ma just be happy with the new flag even tho this government works against us... think about that but put your anc mentality aside...

Just like the street naming saga, it appears the ANC is incrementally attempting to erase white history. There are bigger things to worry about! Lets get criminals off the streets (and out of government) and textbooks in schools, then we can debate out history.

I think it is so sad to absolutely disregard a countries past and history! I agree, we must look forward and move forward, but as some people say that the old flag represents heartache and sorrow, and reminds us of the past, then those same people must stop reliving the past through days such as Heritage day, etc! You cant ask that we move forward by removing a flag representing history, but in the same breath, keep on dwelling on the past! Its double standards. Anyway, the new flag should be removed as well as that flag only represents murder, rape, racism, corruption and a country in disarray! I am not proud of the new flag at all!!!

I thought the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town was a museum? 0.o

Years from now SA school children will ask their history teachers what existed in their country before 1994. I wonder what the answer will be.

  • Cherri - 2012-11-23 13:01

Ag shame, poor ANC cadre that is feeling threatened by a piece of cloth!

  • paul.oxley.520 - 2012-11-23 13:07

If this means that the past is dead and buried, can we please stop hearing how all today's problems are Apartheid's fault!

hope that seeing people begging at traffic lights, including women with babies, hospitals refusing to help women in labour and just looking on as she give birth, the high jobless percentage, hungry and homeless people also upset her, and not just the old flag!!!!

personally me thinks its wrong to remove the flag simply because of the phras,"lest we forget" or something to that effect.Should we just erase and forget what Hitler did to the world,or forget about Idi Anin, and all the evil people that roamed our world?a big NO,just as we celebrate our heroes we should guard against the monsters by not ignoring and discard them to the back of the mind but by teaching about them and how evil they were to humanity.or we are foever doomed since history has a funny way of repeating itself. The future generations needs to be taught about where we come from as south africaand not make the same mistakes our ancester made.the flag should fly right besides the old flag so that when a young person see it could say that where we are from and we are not going back there,NEVER. it must be a reminder as well as a synbol which unite us as south africans.

Amazing how small minded our Government has become. They worry about flags, street names, town names etc while millions are living in poverty and the rest of us is getting there quickly.
