Shoot-out at Johannesburg Pick n Pay

2012-08-30 22:08

Johannesburg - A robber was shot dead and three people were wounded in a hold-up at the Pick n Pay in Radiokop, west of Johannesburg, Gauteng police said on Thursday.

An 14-man gang hit the supermarket at 19:00, ordering everyone inside to lie down, said Lieutnant Colonel Katlego Mogale

The robbers held them at gunpoint while they took money from the tills and some of the cashiers' belongings

Police were alerted and arrived while the robbers were still on the scene, she said.

"Upon realising that the police were on the scene. the robbers opened fire."

An off-duty police officer, a Pick n Pay staff member and a person outside the shop were wounded.

"One suspect was shot dead while trying to flee," said Mogale.

The other robbers made their getaway in two kombis waiting outside the supermarket.

Police later traced one of the vehicles to the George Goch hostel, in Benrose.

"Five suspects were arrested at the hostel and five unlicensed firearms were also recovered," said Mogale. It was not known how much money the robbers took.

Police were still searching for the rest of the robbers.

Live just down the road and was there at about 6pm..makes you think doesn't it how close this crime is and how quickly it can affect you!

      martin.britchford.9 - 2012-08-31 07:34

lol same here, was busy in the liquor store next door til bout 6:30, stoked everyone cept one robber is ok, i hope they are linked to the jukskei park spar killing, still have heard nothing from police or media on that one.

      bradley.kecskes - 2012-08-31 11:13

OH Clifford get a life...Do you now what the criminals walk around with? No battens that i can tell you...and have you seen what respect they show the police?? no consideration for life. shoot to kill

      had.enuf.1 - 2012-08-31 11:39

@Clifford - pity you hadn't been in PnP at the time. You could have asked the criminals what they thought of your viewpoint. It would have been funny to watch them shoot you. Brainless git.

  • Kevin - 2012-08-30 22:26

so they took maybe R150k - among 14 - that means a bit more than R1000 each - how dumb can people get? Oh - sorry - one was shot dead! How convenient - more for the others, but hang on - most have been caught! They may have well just spent a relaxing night at the local shebeen! F@!%ing idiots!

      zebedee.kok - 2012-08-30 22:39

      R10000 each, but still nothing

      dylan.sciarappa - 2012-08-30 22:40

If they took 150k between 14 of them that would be a little more than 10k each no? How dumb can people get?

      martin.britchford.9 - 2012-08-31 07:39

still not bad for ten minutes work, haha its split between 9 okes now lol, i can see the incentive but nevertheless its idiotic, if you gonna rob be good at it and plan to the point you dont have to injure people, and to the indian chap who didnt lie down and make his kids lie down, you risked alot of lives by not paying attention. i hate saying this but good work police.

  • kim.buren - 2012-08-30 22:38

Wild, Wild West. Is there going to be an enquiry with this shoot out too. Just asking

      watsongeorgejan - 2012-08-31 01:07

My thoughts exactly. This is like the fourth shoot-out with cops this week and i'm thinking, is it the furore over the Marikana issue that's causing this?. Maybe this crooks think cops wont shoot them because of the pressure they find themselves under over the other incident. Big ups SAPS rid our country of this scum.

      manningi1 - 2012-08-31 08:44

Let's have a day of mourning for the killed robber. :-)

      susanna.smit.7 - 2012-08-31 22:53

Yep, one of them must have killed a furry little animal on the way there...

  • MoshKaDeph - 2012-08-30 23:01

  • - 2012-08-30 23:08

These idiots got off the xavier off ramp and saps shot out there tyre and they got out and ran with 50 cops cars and most of the robertsham neighbourhood watch after them. HEHE pick the wrong area to try and run. EXCELLENT JOB SAPS, nice to see my tax money going to good use.

      buhlebam.nyuswa - 2012-08-30 23:35

Hooray! Maybe use our tax to train half of the police force as marksmen! We will definitely get positive results (halve the number of criminals).

  • taffaz.banhwa - 2012-08-30 23:15

Don't worry its just one more incident,we will forget about it by the morning!Hey it's not like we haven't heard it all before..same old same old..come on we are used to it by now nothing is going to change so we had to get used to it..strange but if you think we have 100 times more crime now than at the height of apartheid..methinks we voted wrong that one sad day when 60% of us said yes!

      manningi1 - 2012-08-31 08:47

We voted for improvement, not things to get worse. Again the ANC has not delivered.

  • brent.goldwyer - 2012-08-30 23:33

For all my Ozzie friends, This is what I am talking about

  • karen.kotzenberg - 2012-08-30 23:38

Well done SAPS!!! I say shoot all the criminals! I shop there every day at that time and today decided to go to checkers instead, which I never normally do. How can we, the hard working non criminal people of this country retain any hope for a future here when this is happening ALL the time? We aren't safe anywhere!

  • Julia Griffiths - 2012-08-31 00:25

Same P'nP got hit 2 years ago. Begs question was it the same gang from last time?

  • jeremy.forbes.1293 - 2012-08-31 00:35

I wonder how much of the crime up North are perpetrated by foreigners who are in the country to steal as much as they can before heading back to their impoverished countries.

      robi.robert.963 - 2012-08-31 01:18

Jeremy@ truly is the sad time in SA history. Foreigners are destroying this country mostly Nigerians through illegal business such as doing arbortions to our young girls and women and drugs. I discovered that Nigerians who opened surgeries, calling themselves "Gynocologists" are charging from R1000.00 to conduct arbortion by inserting a arbortions pill in the woman 's body and another one placed under the tongue. After a woman experience bleeding, run to the surgery to collect 10 pills to drink immediately. Once a woman experience pains and more bleedings, run to public hospital, cause Nigerian doctor no longer there to complete what he started with a girl or woman. THose who fail to respond in time end up being weak by loosing more blood and some loosing their lives. This is a sad Moment in the history of the country.

      buhlebam.nyuswa - 2012-08-31 11:24

It is common Knowledge that violent crime (house robberies, hijackings) in the North is committed by Zimbabweans, drug trafficking by Nigerians. When people start to point out the obvious are labelled Xenophobic by the same "liberals" of this country.

  • letsekang.masepe - 2012-08-31 01:48

Police later traced one of the vehicles to the George Goch hostel, in Benrose,Zulus from KZN

      Peter Zylstra - 2012-08-31 06:29

@ Letsekang, does it really matter if they are Zulus from KZN. Fact is....they are all africans from SA!

      Fikile Magadla - 2012-08-31 07:37

come on thats so uncalled for

      xolani.t.ngobese - 2012-08-31 07:45

      ...and ur Masepa from where?

  • wilhelm.snyman.1 - 2012-08-31 02:27

Let's embrace African culture, as we constantly exhorted to do... the ANC government steals all our tax money and the robbers are just following their example... I mean it's obvious. Corrective rape and all those delightful examples of civilised interaction just make SA such a stunningly wonderful country to live in, with such dizzy heights of exemplary behaviour for all to enjoy.

  • brionyl.french - 2012-08-31 05:23

They all should have been shot dead!!!! Its time to stop crime by purring criminals in the ground and not in jail. Im so sick of these ass wipes doing this and then walking the streets.

  • tshivhombelaf - 2012-08-31 05:24

The lawlessness in this country is beyond compare. I think a serious makeover is needed at hostels and security could be tightened as most of dangerous weapons are hidden there. Hostels seem to be a gangster paradise.

      maria.roth.589 - 2012-08-31 14:06

Tshvihombelaf. Unfortunately you can't act against crime before it is committed. But what about creating a mood of zero tolerance and that applies to traffic offences and government corruption. People see others being paid like rock stars for just being government cronies and then the ridiculous tolerance for crime. People going to hospital instead of prison others being carried to prison on shoulders and then getting abbreviated sentences, breaking parole and getting away with it while they have nothing. Are you surprised that when there is this attitude towards crime like wanted criminals attending a security screened birthday bash The example being set is pathetic and others not so well connected jump on the band wagon to get their slice of the pie.

  • ryan.eunson - 2012-08-31 06:19

  • michael.kleber.376 - 2012-08-31 07:04

  • tricia.sutherland1 - 2012-08-31 08:10

who can have respect for these robbers as poor desperate Robin Hoods - when they have the entire PicknPay to steal from including the tills but they also take some of the cashiers' belongings??!! Poor stealing from the poor.

  • trevor.songo - 2012-08-31 09:27

    Almost went there last night.....

  • cyril.laubscher - 2012-08-31 14:12

Hope the robbers will get caught and thrown in jail, not sure why when police enter a situation like that they dont block off the exits so they cant race off in getaway taxis. But possibly for the best as more innocent people would have gotten hurt if there was another shootout in the parking lot

      leona.hanekom - 2012-08-31 14:49

The taxis weren't waitjing in the parking lot.. They were outside in the main street

  • pjthesecond.eldest - 2012-08-31 18:24
