Johannesburg - A man ambushed and shot while travelling to Mthatha managed to drive himself to hospital after the attack, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday.

"The man was about a kilometre from town when he was shot at and injured by unknown assailants," Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said.

The 41-year-old man, travelling from Langeni Forest to Mthatha around 21:00 on Saturday, had slowed down at a junction when shots were fired and stones thrown at him. He was injured in his upper body, yet managed to drive to the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital.

Fatyela said the man could not see how many people had attacked him because it was dark. The motive was not yet known and no arrests had been made. A case of attempted murder was being investigated. Police found stones and a bullet in the victim's bakkie.
