Johannesburg - A shop owner shot dead an alleged robber and wounded another at his bottle store in Watville, Benoni, Ekurhuleni police said on Wednesday.

Four men entered the shop on Tuesday afternoon and allegedly pointed a firearm at the shop owner, tied him and his staff up, and started taking cash from the till and alcohol and cigarettes from the shelves, said police spokesperson Mack Mngomezulu.

"When they were about to leave the shop, the owner managed to untie himself, took his firearm and shot two suspects."

One of the men died at the scene. He was found in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The owner then reported the incident to police and said he had shot one of the robbers.

On Tuesday evening, the police found the other alleged robber with a gunshot wound at a hospital in Springs.

He matched the description given by the shop owner, said Mngomezulu.

The other two robbers were arrested on Tuesday night. They were found in possession of two firearms and ammunition.

All three men would appear in the Benoni Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

The shop owner would not face any charges, said Mngomezulu.
