Shot man sees robbers jailed

2012-06-19 09:32

Pretoria - Two men have been jailed for 10 years each for a violent robbery in which a Pretoria man was shot nine times but managed to survive.

The court heard how Jannie Fourie was basically bleeding to death while still fighting back to protect his family against the robbers, reported Beeld.

Fourie had testified how he heard his wife screaming at 02:00 on 15 April 2008 and as he rushed towards her and the men attacking her, he was shot the first time.

“I could feel them shooting off my finger.”

He was shot in the knee, but managed to fight off a man running to the baby’s room. He was then shot below the heart and fell into the baby’s room.

“I heard the baby crying and realised I was going to die. Then the man turned to where my wife was. There was still blood in my body. I was prepared to give that last drop of blood to my family. I got up and gave chase. The coward fled,” testified Fourie.

Romeo Nkwagatse and Jonas Masemola were convicted on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, on two counts of attempted murder and one charge of pointing a firearm.

The family had only been in the house for 50 days.

    only 10 years? disgusting

      fredster.mania.5 - 2012-06-19 09:49

..and then you ask why they do it again and again and again.....

      Rabble-Rouser - 2012-06-19 09:52

They should have been jailed for life. This is a travesty of justice.

      ngoako.mathekga - 2012-06-19 09:52

It is basicaly five years considering parole. that's how dad it is.

      Gareth - 2012-06-19 09:54

The F*&(%)%) up thing is, They will probably get parole in 6 years!!!!!

      charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-06-19 09:57

It would have been better if the victim could have watched them hang! We must get rid of these savage criminals from our country.

      charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-06-19 10:18

True Clifford, but why do we need to live with the fear and threats of revenge? We need respect for human life in South Africa, regardless of skin colour. Where is the respect for human life?

      Klippies - 2012-06-19 10:24

We don't need these people in society! Bring back the death penalty!

      Martin - 2012-06-19 10:29

the people must get them the day they find freedom, and give them a good year, the law protects them for the next 10 years, but that will end, and then they belong to us.

      dwayne.crous - 2012-06-19 10:45

Life or let someone shoot them nine times and see if they survive. That sounds fair!!!!

      eradingoana - 2012-06-19 10:55

      That is our Courts, embarrassing

      templar.known - 2012-06-19 11:00

Yea, and they will be out in 3 - full jails, Presidential pardon blah, blah.

      Eye's Cue - 2012-06-19 11:08

Hey Guys, would stand-up demonstrations help to make our Govt. see what is happening and that we can't go on accepting this rubbish? They did it in Egypt and it worked!!! We can't go on like this, this Country is 'going to the dogs' (savages)!!! Somebody, somewhere, please muster up a plan and let's all follow it through!!! 'Cry the beloved Country'!!!

  • Bless Boswell - 2012-06-19 09:41

Why has this case taken so long to come to court. It happened over 4 years ago. Why did the thieves/murderers only get 10 years. Surely breaking into the sanctity of someone's home, attacking them and stealing their possessions is an extremely serious offence? It indicates a complete lack of respect for others as well as their possessions.

      clifford.sithole.5 - 2012-06-19 11:14

They killing the whites off one by one slowly but surly just like the rhino's.They are going to hit the wrong man's family one day and he will probably go on some sort of revenge attack...Mark my words

      Rob - 2012-06-19 11:35

      Who is " they " clifford ?

      Rob - 2012-06-19 12:30

This country is being held to ransom by " blackmail(ers) criminals."

  • mrsku11 - 2012-06-19 09:45

10 Years for that and people wonder why our crime rate is so high!

  • mark.govender.94 - 2012-06-19 09:46

Wow Mr Fourie, incredible. hope you healing well

      clifford.sithole.5 - 2012-06-19 11:14

  • dorothea.dotty - 2012-06-19 09:46

I just dont understand why people are still optimistic about SA.... and why people like Jannie are still in the country. I got to the point where I could no longer fund this fiasco, or watch my family go through what the Fourie's had to endure.

  • Moi - 2012-06-19 09:47

10 years??? Really?? For attempted murder and attempted rape? Is this supposed to be justice? In ten years (probably less) they'll be out on the streets and this time, the home owner will probably not live to tell the tale.

  • jajabutters - 2012-06-19 09:48

Ten years. REALLY!! That man could have died and you only give those bloody agents 10 years. Crime really does pay in this for lesser sentences that is! How much did they give that judge? I will triple it just to see them get shot 9 times EACH!!

      mrsku11 - 2012-06-19 09:56

The actual problem is that they probably didn't pay the Judge but in the Judges eyes it was a fair sentence. That is the problem!

      jajabutters - 2012-06-19 10:19

@mrsku11. I still dont see how that could be fair. Fair to who, to what? That man almost lost his life and his family must be traumatised for years to come. That judge may need to go back to law school to understand what fair is!

  • - 2012-06-19 09:53

10 years!!!!!!!!! And they call this justice!Sick! Life was the only appropriate sentence if the court really wanted to send out a message! This will only encourage the criminals!!!

  • Shellerjc - 2012-06-19 09:55

I am so sick of hearing Give that Man a bells. It is so damn stale. Alcohol never helped with anything, or saved anything. back to the story - 10 years is a bit of a cheek, they shld have gotten the death penalty, oh wait we dont do that do we? We just send them to jail for free boarding & Lodging, and in a few years we let them out to do it all over again

      charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-06-19 09:58

Oi! Give Shelley a B... sorry, hold that thought, I'll think of something we can all give Shelley. Anyone have any ideas?

      Felix - 2012-06-19 10:13

@Charles a Kauai health shake with extra wheat grass?

      Msika - 2012-06-19 10:14

@ Shelley, ungazoba serious!! have a sense of humor. Agree with your 2nd statement though. - 2012-06-19 10:18

      A sense of humor.

      Marius - 2012-06-19 10:24

I cant agree with you more Shelley. That Bells statement is SOOOO tired and unoriginal!

      Martin - 2012-06-19 10:46

give that man a fat blunt and some munchies

      bradley.kecskes - 2012-06-19 10:56

Well you obviously don't know the history of NIH it was not just used for consumption you forget NIH is used in various anti bacterial substances for treating wounds etc. but that's off the topic what im trying to say the man deserves a medal.

      Provence - 2012-06-19 11:05

      Mrs Balls?

      dorothea.dotty - 2012-06-19 11:19

      i agree shelley. bloody irritating.

  • Provence - 2012-06-19 09:56

ONLY 10 years and out after 3 for good behavior. Then the government says, "It's the duty of every citizen to help fight crime?" Calling all Psychotherapists,"How does one work with a so called government like ours??" NOT POSSIBLE, no logic, no care, zero, the law of the bush - survival of the fittest. Welcome to HELL.

  • Oamis - 2012-06-19 09:56

Mr Fourie will be comforted with the knowledge that these lowly cowards will be provided with a prison roof over their heads to keep away the rain, prison blankets to keep away the winter chill, prison food to keep away the hunger pains, visitations from loves ones, and not to mention free access to medication/ARV's etc should it be warranted, which will be funded from Mr Fouries taxes. Sounds like Justice .......

  • TheyTookMyNickLaZynEko - 2012-06-19 10:07

    so upsetting :(

  • Shellerjc - 2012-06-19 10:09

      please don't, not again

  • Natascha - 2012-06-19 10:13

10 years each. Pathetic. Bastards should be hung balls and left to die

      charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-06-19 10:24

Not possible Natascha. They are cowards, always attacking in little gangs in the night. Cowards have no balls

  • AllanLouiseOelschig - 2012-06-19 10:21

What happenned to prison sentences with HARD LABOUR? Make the F@#$% pay their way through their sentences by doing HARD LABOUR, Quarry time!! Scumbags

  • steveroodt - 2012-06-19 10:22

These guy,s intentions were to kill this man. So how do they get off with a ten year sentence. Nine shots all hits. Min sentence 40 years hard labor. and a thousand lashes over 4 years.

  • gemmaleigh.evans.3 - 2012-06-19 10:25

Fourie is a hero to his family!! I hope they're all extremely proud of him. Those men who thought they were so big waving a gun around...I hope prison shows you how small and insignificant they really are!! So so happy for Fourie!!

      Thando Tdoz Kubheka - 2012-06-19 16:31

      bring back death sentence

  • Bernadette - 2012-06-19 10:27

Disgusted that they have got off so lightly :+( These criminals need to be removed from our society. Banish them all to some far away island where they can live amongst themselves. this way maybe they will eliminate themselves out of our society!!

  • jomardl - 2012-06-19 10:28

10 years??? People get more than that for tax evasion.

  • Stille - 2012-06-19 10:30

These things arent fit to be called people. Apes.

  • omengu - 2012-06-19 10:32

such people should rather be eliminated permanently from the community.

      charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-06-19 10:42

Most would agree with you faster than you could say 'mob justice'.

  • neil.buckley.395 - 2012-06-19 10:33

Those guys must have properly karked them selves when this brave soldier did not die after being shot 9 times. Good on you sir your a hero and put your life in harms way to protect your family. 10 years is a shocking sentence should have been life.

  • foxiloxi - 2012-06-19 10:35

10 years?!!? What a load of nonsense, this means that they will be out in 6 years at the most, just to do the exact same thing?!?!

  • omengu - 2012-06-19 10:37

their sentence should have been 10 multiplied by 9.

  • Dra Gee Maanda Mulelu - 2012-06-19 10:39

this is bull,10 years!!!this just show that they dont care whether you live or die!!!........its none of their gad dammm business,,,

  • jento.dayisi - 2012-06-19 10:41

our justice system sucks big time , judges are not considering how traumatizing these robberies are to the families that are being robbed, shot 9 times in your house , i hope one it will happen to their families and the will feel it ,this judgement sucks

  • Siyabonga Mkhwanazi - 2012-06-19 10:42

You Sir are a hero, you are a real man and a good father, very few left in this world.

  • thozi - 2012-06-19 10:48

The victim was as good as killed. Why has the court failed to impose an appropriate and effective sentence, like life imprisonment with no possibility of parole (...and add, "whatsoever")?

  • Jay Marian - 2012-06-19 10:48

It is clear from the barbaric actions of these scavengers that their intention was to permanently deprive this gentleman of his God given life. Shame on the justice system !!!!

  • obakeng.motsepe.9 - 2012-06-19 10:54

How can these guys only get 10 years for such a violent crime; look at the SA girl who got 15 years for smuggling drugs into Thailand, that is why crime is so rampant in our country. I BLAME OUR LIBERAL JUSTICE SYSTEM.

  • Gavin - 2012-06-19 10:56

I'm getting tired of the punishment not fitting the crime in SA. that an the fact that we have so many criminals in the ruling party. if JZ was the CEO of a company, they would've canned his ass ages ago. we insist on hectic credentials for every job, but not for that of leader of a country.... crime keeps 'em focused on themselves and not on us - ANC philosophy. I have deep respect for Jannie and his bravery, may the force always be with you dude.

      Charnelle - 2012-06-19 11:30

      10 Years huh? Disgusting!

The two guys desrved to be jailed for good In 5 years time they will be released and they might repeat the cruel thing they did.\r\nJudges need to do more on things like this.

  • Olwethu - 2012-06-19 11:13

Only 10years???? This is bull sh*t man. These people will come out now now and start all over again with their crimes... Do SA Judges even think these days??

Really? Attempted murder can now be restructured as 'pointing a firearm' in court? This is another great example of what will happen if the government collects up all firearms from law abiding people!
