Sifiso Zulu hands himself over - report

2012-05-12 21:04

Johannesburg - Convicted Durban businessman Sifiso Zulu handed himself over at the Westville Prison on Saturday to start a three-year sentence for culpable homicide, the SABC reported.

He was expected to report to prison on Friday, following the  KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg's dismissal of his appeal last week against his conviction and sentence for a 2008 road accident.

Zulu, 42 the former head of the Durban Chamber of Commerce, was convicted in April 2010.

The court found that Zulu, driving a BMW X5, had jumped a red robot and crashed into a bakkie, killing two members of the Souls Harbour Church and injuring eight others in March 2008.

He was sentenced to five years in jail, two of which were suspended, and fined R7 000 for various driving offences.

Failing to appear on Friday - his 2 year suspended sentence should be revoked... he failed to report, a condition, surely of which he failed...

      Kala - 2012-05-13 09:27

I say he still got off lightly even if 2 years was not suspended. 5 Yeras for killing to people and going through a red robot makes it culpable homocide.

And hell my spelling has gone for a ball of pooh this Sunday morning.

Democracy at it's best! No-one is above the law. Sifiso is having a chance for a review of his sentence at Concourt. Skipping a red robot is very dangerous, just look how members of a church were knocked, injured and killed. Drivers be careful on the road, there are some amendments on the roads. If you knock and kill, the charge is murder and more culpable homicide. If you knock and injure,it's attempted murder. For those who lost their lives RIP.

      Warren - 2012-05-12 21:54

First of all this isn't murder...murder is intentional. He may be guilty of many things but even I don't think he intentionally killed anyone. Secondly, how is this democracy at its best? Many people greater sentences for fraud. I'd almost be able to accept the sentence if he'd cooperated but he didn't. He tried every trick and loophole in the book to evade the law, (even jumping out a window of his apartment when the cops showed up to take him away). That is not the tactic of a remorseful person. His sentence was way too light and probably because of his personal connections.

      Warren - 2012-05-13 04:23

@ george Here's a dictionary definition for you. murder in criminal law, the unjustified killing of one person by another, distinguished from the crime of manslaughter by the element of malice and\or aforethought. Like Michael says politicians can't change the meanings of words. They do however twist and bend them. The day a top ANC politician accidentally runs over and kills a pedestrian is the day murder is dropped and "manslaughter" is reinstated for such events. Manslaughter is not some minor crime either, just the technically correct term for accidental unprovoked killing of another.

Mbo Zulu yes it was not intentionally BUT he never showed remorse, never said sorry to us!! I'm paralyzed and you talk like this??? If he took responsibility from the start he wouldn't be in jail today, let alone that he left us to die, didn't care

      Lucy - 2012-05-13 08:35

it might not have been his intention to kill those people but it was his intention to jump a red robot and drive negligently and when you do that you kill people - thats why we have laws - and that is why you supposed to abide by the laws - and when you dont you do kill people and you are punished...simple hey!!!!

Bheki Cele was supposed to be charged too as he tried to protect him by removing him from the accident scene since Zulu was intoxicated.

      Nada Nozimbali - 2012-05-13 02:42

His lawyer will give him some medical advice and then he can be release next week

  • Nkosinathi - 2012-05-13 11:16

If it was in Botswana he will be pleading for his life as that crime warrant death sentence. He was drunk, jumped red lights, killed two people and injured eight more. Zulu believe in Blood money, money paid to the next of kin of a murder victim as a fine. He must save all his sentence and be a good citizen afterwards.
