Johannesburg - Police in Gauteng suspect that a single gang of armed robbers is targeting officers in the province after two brazen attacks in the last two days alone.

Police spokesperson Theko Pharasi told Eyewitness News that the modus operandi of the suspects seems to show they’re “very focused” and that it’s the same robbers.

Police announced on Monday evening they were offering a R400 000 reward for information that could lead to the arrest of a group of people who shot dead two police officers on the N3 highway in Modderfontein, Johannesburg, Sapa reported.

One officer died on the scene and a second died later in hospital. A third was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

And in a second incident, an officer was wounded and a police car hijacked by a gang brandishing AK47s in Kempton Park, Sapa stated.

Two patrolling police officers instructed the driver of a truck parked in Albatross Street to open the back after noticing its number plates did not match, Major Mack Mngomezulu said.

After forcing the driver to open the truck, six people sitting in the back opened fire, injuring one of the officers in the lower body.

The Institute for Security Studies’ Johan Burger told the Times police management must start considering providing police officers with armoured cars.

Nine police officers had been killed in Gauteng since the beginning of the 2014/15 financial year.
