Johannesburg - Six people died when two cars collided during a high-speed chase with metro police officers in Durban on Sunday, the KwaZulu-Natal transport department said.

"Preliminary investigations by police reveal that a driver of a Mercedes Benz and four of his passengers were involved in an altercation in Durban city centre where they brandished firearms," said spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane.

"The altercation was reported to the metro police who spotted the Mercedes Benz and gave chase."

The Mercedes then drove onto the M4 highway, in the direction of oncoming traffic and collided with a Nissan Tiida.

The Mercedes then burst into flames and all five people in the vehicle were confirmed dead at the scene.

"The driver of the Nissan Tiida was also killed on impact," said Ncalane.

KZN Community Safety MEC, Willies Mchunu, on Sunday, expressed sadness at the incident.

"We are saddened to continuously lose lives in such a reckless nature and extend our condolences to the families of the deceased," he said.
