Johannesburg - A Cape Town dentist who allegedly beat a gardener with a sjambok, could face an attempted murder charge, the Cape Argus reported on Friday.

Jan van Tonder who also serves in the army, appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court on Thursday, on a charge of assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, crimen injuria and defeating the ends of justice.

The case was postponed to 21 November after prosecutor Nathan Johnson asked for time to consult gardener Muhammed Makungwa about adding a charge of attempted murder.

Makungwa was late for work in Rondebosch on Sunday morning and was running along Palmyra Road where he said he was almost run over by someone driving a White BMW 5.

"I kept on running and then he tried to drive his car into me," Makungwa told the Cape Argus.

"I stopped and he got out and started whipping me with a sjambok. He just went crazy and didn't give a chance to explain myself."

The prosecutor said Van Tonder had been awoken by a sound near his motor vehicle that morning. When he went to investigate, he saw Mukungwa and suspected he was breaking into his car.

Earlier this week police issued an appeal for the person who had information about the incident to contact them.

The case was postponed to 21 November.
