Newspapers focus on Graeme Smith divorce

Former Proteas Test skipper Graeme Smith and his Irish wife Morgan Deane, are to divorce. Among today's newspaper front pages are stories of the split. Watch.WATCH

Cape Town - Close friends of Graham Smith’s wife, Morgan Deane, have lashed out at the former Proteas captain claiming the first his wife knew of their split was when he mistakenly sent her a text message meant for his lawyer confirming his intention to divorce her.

According to the Sunday Times, Deane’s friends claim Smith abandoned his family in favour of partying with the boys and state he is obsessed with the limelight.

They say he finds her boring and says she is a nag when she asks him to spend time with his family.

According to the newspaper, the marriage had been rocky for a while but in January, after she returned from visiting her mother in Ireland, she thought Smith intended to patch things up as she was told to go for counselling. When she arrived, she was reportedly told by someone there that Smith intended to divorce her. This person apparently gave her the name and number of the lawyer she was to use.

Deane’s friends say she was distraught on hearing this and returned home. When Smith arrived she confronted him. He denied everything and turned it around on her reportedly saying that as she now had a lawyer he too would get one.

A few minutes later Deane received a text message on her phone. On reading it she realised it was from Smith and was meant for the lawyer he had hired for her. In it he asked the lawyer why Morgan had been informed, because he (Smith) wanted to tell her himself, said Deane’s friends.

The friends say she is devastated and cannot believe how he has treated her. They say his sudden request for a divorce has made her wonder if another woman is involved.

Smith blamed Deane

As reported by News24, Smith announced the couple’s intention to divorce last month and until now, information on the split has been forthcoming from his camp only. Soon after the announcement, friends of the cricketer blamed Deane for their breakup claiming she had decided to put her singing career ahead of their marriage.

One of Smith’s friends had described him as "shattered" by the couple’s divorce, saying he worshipped the ground she walked on. “We all thought it was her who left him. She’s previously threatened him with divorce," said the friend, who asked to remain anonymous.

Smith, 34, apparently told his former cricket team-mates that it was actually he who filed for divorce, but said nothing more.

Last year Smith quit cricket completely. Friends of the couple said this was because Deane, 31, who is Irish, gave him an ultimatum and threatened divorce if he didn’t put his family first.

Sources close to the couple toldCity Press the pair had been fighting recently and divorce had been on the cards for some time.

One friend, who attended their wedding at a church in Cape Town’s southern suburbs in August 2011, said he was shocked and sad.

"It was a lovely wedding. Graeme was so emotional. He told me she was the one. Seems she wasn’t." The friend added that there were no third parties involved.

"I heard over the past few weeks they have been fighting big time. He has been staying at home for the kids, but I think she has her eyes on a career as a singer again."

The friend said Smith was a homebody at heart but Deane liked to be social and go to parties. Smith was, the friend said, very involved in raising his children.

"He got up in the middle of the night to give bottles and change nappies."

Saddened friends say the couple got married too quickly – they had known each other for just six months before they tied the knot.

Meanwhile, Deane, on her Twitter account, dismissed speculation that she was the one who left Smith.

"This story is untrue and disgusting. Never has a story been so incorrect. I will speak in my own time," she wrote.
