Snow cancels long-distance trains

Johannesburg - Long-distance train services were cancelled on Tuesday due to poor weather, the Passenger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa) said.

"All trains from Gauteng to Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal will be affected and will result in the cancellation of services," Prasa spokesperson Leonard Potgieter said in a statement.

The Trans Natal, between Johannesburg and Durban, and the Amatola, between Johannesburg and East London, would not run on Tuesday.

"All customers currently en-route on Mainline Passenger Services trains will be cared for and provided with food and drinks until the services are restored. Alternative transport arrangements will also not be possible since the roads to these provinces are also closed."

Snowfall across the country has led to road closures.

Indeed there are. I had a very pleasant trip from Cpt to Jhb on Premier Classe two weeks ago. Highly recommended.

@ Deon - something I have wanted to do for a long time. Travelled frequently on the trains all over SA (even to Namibia) in my youth, best holidays of my life

Pity - could be very scenic to have a trainride through the snow.

We have trains between the provinces?

  • BigMoose - 2011-07-26 18:20

The snow will not stop the gravy train, that's for sure.

Not only trains are affected, but exclusive and reliable buses country wide, Trunslux has been affected. Exclusively they provide food to all their clients, isn't that an excellent service we need in SA? Absy Ladysmith

The Gravy Train is one train that will never have any kind of break down or delay!
